What If By Randall Munroe Sparknotes
The book What If: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe is a book that includes a series of hypothetical questions that the author, a famous American cartoonist, tries to explain or answer in a scientific and clear way. However, this book is not a good book because it has no plot, doesn't involve developed characters and also has no chronological sequence. To begin, the book does not have a plot. This can be seen in the text, it states, “A brief story the official record for the fastest manmade object is the Helios 2 probe, which reached about 70 km/s in a close swing around the Sun” (Munroe, 58). This quote shows the small interruption made by the author in the middle of his answer. Although What If doesn't have an overall plot, it essentially has small …show more content…
This can be seen throughout multiple questions in the book. One excerpt from the text states, “Seconds pass. Everyone looks around. There are a lot of uncomfortable glances. Some coughs.” (Munroe, 44). As shown by the quote, none of the characters in this question are developed. Developed characters are characters that are repeated and emphasized throughout a story. Lastly, this book does not contain developed characters and frankly any characters at all leading it to be a bad book. One main factor that leads What If to being a bad book is that it doesn't not follow a chronological sequence. This can be seen from the text, “Weird (and worrying) questions from the What If? Inbox, #1” (Munroe, 14). As seen from the quote, the book strays from its normal sequence and starts adding in questions that are unanswered, unlike the 13 pages prior. Also seen form the quote, there is no chronological order the questions reside in. Meaning that reading one question will not lead into the next as they are completely irrelevant to one another. A good book is one that builds up plot throughout the beginning to the end of the

First of all, it was incredibly predictable. Many times, things were resolved through something very convenient happening totally out of nowhere and by surprise. For example, the main character Jacob, many times, almost died but was miraculously saved because some person or some thing appeared out of nowhere. Jacob gets a headache, he senses the hollows, the hollows appear and Jacob gets rid of them. The same pattern repeats its self over and over which gets the reader bored.…

The subject Aldous Huxley has chosen to write about is a world in which everything is “perfect” a world in which everyone feels fulfilled through false mechanics. Emotions of fear and anger are no longer stimulated through dangerous encounters with the outside world. Humans are treated through V.P.S (Violent Passion Surrogate) to feel these emotions with no harm being done to there bodies. This still gives them the adrenaline rush that they need monthly, allowing them to feel “alive”. The world Huxley creates tells us that the only way a perfect society can exist is to no longer allow humans to believe in supernatural forces such as God and jesus and to take away the fear of dying and getting old. Thus allowing humans no need for God.…

Books are precious pieces that improve one’s knowledge and help define one’s personality by relating themselves to characters within the text. As Vladimir Nabokov said in Good Readers and Good Writers “The reader should identify himself or herself with the hero or heroine.”(Nabokov, 973) I always believed that by reading a book you become one with yourself by somehow feeling all the problems of the characters and become completely absorbed in their world, therefore feeling like you have a purpose as you read.…
