the college music school environment and knew that was where I belonged. I also had opportunities to perform and rehearse with the Knoxville Opera Company and Tennessee Wind Symphony, experiences which both inspired me and gave me a view of the professional music world. I have also faced challenges in my musical life. Last semester, I chose to change teachers and start an embouchure change. For the first time in my life, I dreaded practicing. I could no longer communicate through my instrument because I was relearning how to play my instrument. However, this challenge has made me stronger and more confident in my ability to persevere through hardships with music. I believe Indiana University will provide me with a place to continue in my pursuit of excellence in music. I look forward most to being able to learn, not only from professors, but fellow students, every performance I can attend, and my own mistakes. Every opportunity will be something I take on and learn from. In the long term, my goal is to combine my love for music with service. It is my idea and goal to spread and teach the joy of music as far and wide as possible to people who normally would not receive it, whether that’s here in America or a third world country. I do not believe that location, status, and class should determine people’s ability to experience this beautiful phenomenon. Music has been in my life longer and more constantly than almost anything else. I believe Indiana University is a place where I can contribute, thrive as a musician, and be provided with skills necessary to give back to the world through music.
