What is art?

What is art? This is a question that if you ask one hundred people you would get one hundred different answers. Art to some is scribbles or junk to another. I find that I enjoy paintings that are realistic. I do not like paintings that are unrealistic in that subjects are too large or small for their surroundings. One of my favorite paintings is “The betrothal of the Arnolfini” is realistic and shows the love between a husband and a wife, or a man and a woman who are ready to vow their lives to each other. This makes me think of my wedding day and how nervous and happy I was. When you look into your partners eyes and see the love they have for you is one of the greatest moments in a couple’s life. I find that I do not respond to abstract art as intensely as I do to realistic paintings. I find that it is chaotic and very disturbing. “The Scream” by Edward Munch is very gothic and dark. It portrays death and dark times in one’s life. It is a dark paining with a lot of black color in it. It is depressing and sad to me. The content of art can is important if the painting is that of an impressionistic meaning. If the painting is of realistic and common subjects then content is very important as it shows expressions and feelings the artist is trying to portray. As with an author the content of his writing I important in order to convey the meaning of what the author is saying otherwise it would only be a bunch of words with no meaning. Art doesn’t have to be paintings it can be sculptures or any medium. The work of Michelangelo in the sculpture of “David” is also considered art. This sculpture was done in marble during the renaissance period. This was a period in history where many famous artists were born and it was also a time of great creations of art. Today we see sculptures made of metal and plastic. There are sculptures made from aluminum cans and tools to the floats in the rose parade made from flowers. All is considered art and has its

Choosing a specific piece of art to write about is not the easiest task. Art is so subjective and there are so many different types and styles from which to choose. My own personal preference tends toward the classic; structure over abstract. I would have to say the thing that most impresses me about any artwork is the skill and the craftsmanship put into a piece. When I say craftsmanship I mean the ability to create something at the highest level that that person is able to produce. Craftsmanship means superior skill coupled with ability and attention to detail, that produces a piece that is more than just pretty, or full of symbolic meaning.…

Art is considered to vary across culture and also through time. Art considered as a masterpiece by this group of people might not even be appreciated by another group of people. Art changes through time and the value of a certain artistic piece might increase or decrease through time. Art is what defines a culture, thus it is regarded by many as the main (not sure we could say this, I think you wanted to say something else)aspect in a culture’s construction. What is art? Can it be defined in any single painting, or sculpture? Is it even something that can be seen, or does it have to be experienced? The term “art” is so vague that it can be applied to almost anything, really. Mostly, however, art should be that which frees our imagination. It connects our conscious with our subconscious, putting into a visual form what we feel and think. It allows us to explore our inner self and fill that urge to understand our minds and our universe. Art helps us to see beyond the ordinary, to see what is in our hearts without being blinded by reality. When an artist creates a painting, it is not to create a picture; it is to create a feeling or mood. The purpose is to convey an emotion, and, it is hoped, to make the viewer experience that same emotion. The painting is really just the final result. Pablo Picasso once said “…the thing that counts, in painting, is the intention of the artist…What counts is what one wants to do, and not what one does… In the end what was important is the intention one had.”…
