What Is Marjane's Impact On Persepolis

The graphic novels Persepolis 1 and Persepolis 2 are graphic autobiographical novels that describe the life of Marjane Satrapi who also happens to be the author. The change of setting between Iran and Austria, her development and the strong political views she holds constantly put her in an emotional distress. She is a brave and strong women who lived through the Iranian revolution in 1979 but dared to stand up to the Islamic regime and express her views. This is a very dangerous act and it could’ve put her family’s safety at risk, but nevertheless she doesn’t let anything silence her. Her rebellious nature especially comes to the surface when she is in Austria. While living in Vienna we see that her friends have a lot of effect on her development, especially Julie. Marji started to wear make up, stopped wearing the veil and tried new things which were offered to her by Julie. From extensive analysis I have concluded that Julie had the biggest impact on Marji’s maturation,
It’s just one huge panel and Satrapi chose to do so to show how big of a deal this was for Marji. It’s the scene of Julie’s party where people are smoking, kissing and you see Marji in the corner of the room. Her small body appearance is done to show how little effect she has in that room and also her eyes are so gigantic because she is amused and shocked. Marji was absolutely shocked from this scene. She didn’t even say a word so Satrapi uses voice overs to tell us how she was feeling. As Marji calls it she was “turned off by all these displays of affection.” She couldn’t see her in any of these things so she picked a safe spot for her. The way she is sitting on the floor shows the reader how scared and shocked she was. Her arms wrapped around her legs, this is a picture of Marji scared, confused and shocked, so many things were going through her mind and she couldn’t even had imagined that things in that nature had existed or could’ve been
