To answer this question we must first under what is organizational behavior, then we would be able to understand its relevance to practicing managers in any organization. We shall first define what organizational behaviour is. As define by (Robbins and Judge, it is a field of study which investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structure have on behaviour within organizations, for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving organizations effectiveness. In other words OB is concerned with the study of what people do in the organization and how their behaviour affects the organizations performance. OB specifically concerned with employment related situations such as jobs, work, absenteeism, employment turnover, productivity, human performance and management. Hence, the purpose of OB is to understand, predict and influence behaviour at work; these are and should be critical to any practicing manager. OB includes a number of core topics such as motivation, leadership, group structure, conflict and many others. When employees perform better the organization itself performs better.
There are some disciplines that contribute to OB and they are sociology, psychology, social psychology and anthropology. These disciplines will give practicing managers the necessary tools to deal with a diverse workforce.
The purpose of organizational behavior is to apply the knowledge gained about individuals, groups and structure and the effects of structure on behavior in order to make organizations work more effectively. For example it would assist practicing managers to develop and know the importance of creating a compelling vision. They should also learn that it takes time to understand what motivates each person. This skill would assist them to successfully hire persons with complementary skills and show ways to inspire and challenge them to operate at an optimum level.
