During late adulthood, physicality becomes harder to attain. As adults get older they will eventually have hearing loss, restful sleep, weaker immune system, physical appearance and mobility, and touch sensitivity for some adults. “Physical declines become more apparent in late adulthood, as more organs and systems of the body are affected.” My grandmother experienced a few of these symptoms. Due to hearing loss, there were times people had to constantly repeat themselves while standing right in front of her. “T cells attack antigens directly, become less effective.” To add, the immune system tends to have more problems due to it turning against normal body tissue in the autoimmune response. As a result, my grandmother was frequently
sick with a cold. However, her physical appearance and mobility wasn’t too bad. She was still able to walk on her own, even though it was a little slower than usual. Cognitive
Not only does one’s physical features decline but also aspects like memory, the ability to problem solve, and language processing. Keeping up with memory is sometimes hard for anyone. Correspondingly, my grandmother had trouble remembering certain things. For an example, where she put her keys, glasses, or just a simple event that happen in the past. All of which are reasonable things to forget. Older adults have limitations with memory which makes it difficult include relevant details when dealing with complex issues. Under those circumstances, problem-solving was an issue. Altogether, despite the defects, my grandmother was a very intelligent woman for as long as she lived.
Social
My grandmother lived in a family oriented community. To say the least, the people who lived there have been around for several years. With that being said, she was able to keep a healthy social relationship with others. To add, she was also really close with her three children. They kept in contact often and always kept her busy. As older adults transition to the end of life, they experience a great deal of depression which can lead to suicidal thoughts. For this reason, it’s important to keep older adults involved in their communities as much as possible. My grandmother did the things she loved as long as she could, she participated in things like bingo and bowling. Thus, when it was her time to go, she left remorsefully.
