What Is Rip Van Winkle Admirable
“Rip Van Winkle,” is a character that is part of American mythology. The character trait least evident is, admirable. In the story, we see that his neighbors loved him. Including the men, women and children. Unfortunately, when he was at home he always wanted to leave. He complained about his nagging wife. It seemed he was all too happy to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, but to his own family, it was a different story. To me, that is not admirable. Not when you have a wife and children. When his wife asked if he could help clean up the farm a little bit, he refused. To me, if you truly loved your wife, you would do it to not only make her happy, but to upkeep your land. “Poor rip was at last reduced almost to despair; and his only alternative …show more content…
He heads home when he awakens with no gun, no wolf, and has little interest to see his wife. “He dreaded to meet his wife.” (72) After he finds his house in shambles, he finds a bunch of villagers and asks where can he find his friends? They reply they were dead. He then asks about his wife. “Where is your mother?” His daughter replied, “Oh she died but a short time since, she broke a blood vessel in a fit of passion at a New- England peddler.” He was quoted then saying, “There was a drop of comfort, at least in this intelligence.” (76) I found this hard to believe, in fact, it disgusted me. Come on, you have been married to this woman for years. He holds little to no emotion when it comes to her. Even if he did not have feelings for her anymore, he had two children with her. For me, that is not admirable, that is just selfishness. He would rather be with the townsfolk then be with his family. “Rip Van Winkles” character was not admirable. He liked to drink and run away from home when things got to tough. After his long twenty year slumber, he learns to find that his wife of two children died, and showed little to no emotion. He was not very close to his nagging wife or his kids, and that in the very least is not

Your wife, sir, was I believe my favourite victim. I'm writing to you from a dim, foul-odored, cramped cell. The walls are leaky and covered in mildew. Unlike your bedroom of course. How hard was it to get Meredith’s blood and other stains off of your walls? She deserved every single lash, kick, and stab that she received. I never got to get a glimpse of the autopsy photographs. And I am aware that her left finger & kidney were missing. They were delicious and go well with risotto. I have a few months left until they inject me. Sending me home to my father, Satan. I have left…

In the beginning of the story, he was arrogant and didn’t care about what the weather was like, even when the old timer told him that when it’s fifty below, travel with a partner. “The mysterious, far-reaching hairline trail, the absence of sun from the sky, the tremendous cold, and the strangeness and weirdness of it all -- made no impression on the man”(1). During the middle of the story, he found himself getting frustrated. “He had never experienced such cold, walking he rubbed his cheek-bones and nose, and the following instant the end of his nose went numb”(3). Soon he started to realize that he should’ve listened to the old timer. Towards the end, when he finally grasped that he was going to freeze to death, he was first fearful of dying, but then panic started to set in. Which made him run around in a frenzy to keep his warmth. But after a while, he comprehended that, that wasn’t going to help, so he calmed himself. “He was bound to freeze anyway, and he might as well take it decently. With his new found peace if mind came the first of drowsiness. A good idea, he thought, to sleep off to…

He was not a very important man, in the common sense of the word. He had never occupied a position of leadership or authority. He had never controlled a large business. He had never possessed great wealth. He was no more than a common man, a dime a dozen. Now he was lying upon a snow white bed, soft and comfortable. His hair was white and disappearing. His skin was faded, pale as parchment. His cheeks were no longer rosy with the energy of his youth. He was thin and light, no longer possessing the strength of his youth. His chest rose and fell gently, like the swell of the open sea. His eyes still held the light and joy of his younger years, but he did not have the energy to carry it out. His mind, however sharp, was dulled by the weakness…

Oh, my God! That worries me so. Suppose I think I’m in love with a man and I marry him and it turns out I’m not in love with him. What does being in love mean? I wish I didn’t think so much. I wish to heaven I didn’t. Everything bad that happens to a girl I begin to worry it will happen to me. All night I’ve been worrying. Part of the time I’ve been worrying that I’d end an old maid like Aunt Sarah, and part of the time I worry that I’ll fall in love with someone like Syd and defy Papa and run off with him and then realize I made a mistake and part of the time I worry… that what happened to Sibyl Thomas will happen to me and.. .(A pause) Could what happened to Sibyl Thomas ever happen to you? I don’t mean the dying part. I know we all have to die. I mean the other part - having a baby before she was married. How do you think it happened to her? Do you think he loved her? Do you think it was the only time she did? You know… (A pause.) Old, common, Anna Landry said in the girls’ room at school, she did it whenever she wanted to, with whomever she wanted to and nothing ever happened to her. And if it did she would get rid of it. How do women do that? I don’t trust Anna Landry and I don’t know who else to ask. Can you imagine the expression on Mama’s face, or Aunt Lucy’s or Mrs. Cookenboo’s if I asked them something like that? (A pause.) Anyway, even if I knew I would be afraid to do something like that before I got married for fear God would strike me dead. (A pause.) Aunt Sarah said that Sibyl’s baby dying was God’s punishment of her sin. Aunt Lucy said if…
