Roman Slaves Slaves in Rome were the prisoners of war, sailors took them and sold them by pirates, or slaves bought outside Roman territory. If it weren’t for slaves in Rome, It would've been hard for the Romans to live the lifestyles that they wanted. A Roman Emperor, usually had about 20,000 slaves, just for his use. In all of Rome, about 25% were slaves. Slavery in Ancient Rome were a lot different from its modern forms and that it was not based on race. But like modern slavery, it was an abusive and degrading institution. Cruelty was commonplace. In hard times, it was not uncommon for desperate Roman citizens to raise money by selling their children into slavery.
When the Romans took over the Mediterranean, they took millions of slaves over to Italy, where they were placed on the large plantations or in the houses and workplaces of richer citizens. The Italian economy relied on …show more content…
During the late Roman Empire, Roman farmers and traders were slow to pay large amounts of money for slaves because they did not want to pay for a falling economy. The status of a slave continued for many years, but slaves were slowly replaced by paid workers in the cited and by peasants in the rural areas. This type of labor was cheap labor without the cost that the owner had to pay for slaves for work.
