What Is Standardized Testing In Schools
In the United States stress levels in kids and teens in elementary through high school are rising and becoming an issue. An NBC news survey shows that out of a scale of 10 stress levels for teens are at a 5.8. This is higher than adults whose numbers are at 5.1. So much for a care free youth. Schools put an emphasis on a make or break grade in standardized testing, pushing college and career plans at an early age. Most kids stress from performing well in school and not to mention every other thing they have to balance. Such as, and after school job, volunteering, extracurricular activities, relationships and fitting in. All of these things fit into one big balloon that could pop at any moment. In other areas, outside of the United States …show more content…
Standardized testing is an administered test that the government gives out to determine kids and teachers academic and teaching abilities. The test is basically pre-determined with questions and answer suggestions kids should already know the answers to and have been taught in school. These tests determine how well we are being taught and obtaining the information. If a schools standardized test scored re high that mean the school is doing an effective job of teaching. Standardized testing is not an effective way of seeing the school’s ability at all for a few reasons, the first being that “test developers are obligated to create a one size fits all assessment” (asce.org) this means test developers cannot create a test that suits every individual student needs making standardized testing way harder for some kids. The second reason why standardized testing is not effective in schools is because the test only includes questions that 90 percent of the kids taking it got it right. If only 80 percent of students got a question right it is cut from the test. Basically, cutting out all the questions teachers could improve on to benefit the students more are being cut causing more stress on the teachers to keep having to teach new material. The third reason is being that questions that are being asked on standardized test are not questions students have been learning I class. Teachers teach the concepts but very rarely are the concepts being driven into their heads because teachers are forced to move on to the next subject so the kids will not fall behind this is a concern in mainly mathematics. But, there are a few solutions that may relive some stress off this test do some research and learn more about the topic at hand. Spread the word about standardized testing not accurately rating the school’s quality level of education. A final solution is to take the

When going to school students are supposed to learn based off a curriculum, but instead they are learning based off a test. These test are meant to help students, but instead they are hurting them. Standardized test requires all test takers to answer the same questions, or a selection of questions from common bank of questions, in the same way. Also they are scored in a “standard” or consistent manner, which makes it possible to compare the relative performance of individual students or groups of students. Each state has a different name for their standardized test, for Virginia they call theirs the Standards Of Learning, SOL’s. These test are neither fair nor objective, puts pressure on the students, and it cuts off time in the school year.…

Standardized tests have many positive outcomes; one is students being able to compare their knowledge to the rest of the country. Standardized test works by everyone around the country taking the exact same test. After the test is completed and graded, students get their results with grade average results compared to their results. An example of this is the ISTEP test. The ISTEP test had three grading levels: Fail, Pass, and Pass +. The grades are self-explanatory. A good grade was a Pass and a great grade would be a Pass +. With the results students can realize what they need to focus on to improve in the future. If one gets a Pass + in math but a lower Pass grade in English then they would know by the results to focus more on English in the future. A bad part about judging one’s education on one test is that the student may have just had a bad testing day, or they…

Diagnostic tests are used to identify the needs of students that may need extra guided instruction by testing specific skills. Standardized tests are a type of diagnostic tests that are used to diagnose individual learning problems or strengths of the students. The most commonly used forms of standardized testing are when they are used to evaluate students’ progress and teachers’ and schools’ effectiveness (Slavin, 2015, p.385,386). “If the purpose of learning is to score well on a test, we’ve lost sight of the real reason for learning”. Admits Jeannie Fulbright. Students should not take standardized tests. Testing takes up too much time, there are too many tests, and schools have to wait too long for results.…

Stress was something everyone experience in their daily lives. It can be too much for some people depending on how they handle and it can lead to an “overload.” For example, my parents are mainly stressed about their job and taking care of my little sister, Natalie and I, while my friend, Serra is very stressed about schoolwork and band. She even had signs of stress like headaches and panic attacks according to “Stress in Children…”. Also, I read on articles that teens are having higher stress levels than normal; therefore, I was hoping if there were ways that schools could help these teens since this can or almost affect their future like I was in middle school. In seventh and eighth grade at Shadow Ridge Middle School, I was defiant against…

Standardized testing has had a growing emphasis in this country. “A typical student takes 112 mandated standardized tests between pre-kindergarten classes and 12th grade, a new Council of the Great City Schools study found. By contrast, most countries that outperform the United States on international exams test students three times during their school careers.” (Washinton post) School systems now are getting so caught up in these different tests, they are forgetting the real core of what they should be teaching in school, and how they should be going about teaching students. "Learning is about so much more than just filling in the right bubble," Obama said in a video released on Facebook. “So we're going to work with states, school districts,…

Standardized tests are mandated tests that the state requires each student to take, in order to measure their academic achievement. There have been findings that suggest some tests are not well aligned to each other. I believe that schools now days are “teaching to test” instead of teaching to learn. Students do need to learn how to be good test takers, but they also need…

From my point of view, standardized tests are changing the landscape of the classroom as we know it. Before the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, students were able to have fun while learning and didn’t have to worry about the stress and anxiety that comes along with taking standardized tests. After the No Child Left behind Act of 2001, education has deteriorated to the point where education reform is something that is now necessary. Without any education reform, education as we know it will forever be tarnished and undermined. With education being one of the “necessary organs” for society to function properly, our society will suffer the consequences and it will be reflected through our higher crime rates and…

Stress in a teenager’s life can be caused by many factors. One reason many adolescents lead stressful lives is that they are always put under pressure by their parents. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), when parents divorce or put their teens in new schools, they get stressed out because they’re thrown into an unfamiliar environment. Also, parents’ high expectations for their children to keep their grades up affect 68% of American teens, says a recent study named “Shifting the Lens”. Moreover, another stressor in teens’ lives is keeping up with all their schoolwork. The most stressful thing about going back to school is trying to make deadlines and at the same time keeping a high grade point average, according to a survey by kidshealth.org. Furthermore, with every passing year a teen’s worries about supporting themselves in the future intensify; Globe and Mail says this is just one of the top three reasons teenagers stress so much over school. The final major stress factor in a teen’s life is maintaining a balanced social life. With bullying being a growing problem nowadays more and more adolescents are suffering from anxiety and fear, says medicalnewstoday.com. In addition, the Wall Street Journal says peer pressure is yet another growing problem amongst teenagers; worrying about making the right choice can also stress teenagers out. All in all, because of family issues, demanding deadlines in school and keeping good relationships with peers, teens are susceptible to stress in their lives.…

Is standardized testing improving our students’ academic achievement level? Or is it causing several high schools around the world to have a lower graduation rate? I personally feel that there should be no standardized test that determines if students graduate and receive their diploma. Causing stress on our teachers, lowering graduation rates, and putting at risk students at a higher risk is three of several reasons why standardized testing should no longer be permitted in our schools.…
