Not only did I need to do well to prove my academic achievement but also to help me get into college. I have goals that I want to achieve and standardized testing has made them a little more difficult. I had to retake the SAT and the ACT because I did not do well the first time. I am a part of a large percentage of students who have chosen to retake the ACT or the SAT at Suttons Bay. Not only is it causing stress but they are not helping the students to improve their academic abilities. They also only measure a small portion of what a meaningful education is. A meaningful education involves creativity, motivation, critical thinking, leadership and many more. Students are now so focused on how to test rather than how to use their creativity to help them learn subjects like math, science, history, and english. All of the subjects which are tested on in the state’s standardized tests.
Standardized testing does help students to manage their time, as the standardized tests are timed. They also help the state understand what subjects students thrive in and what subjects they need to work on. By knowing that information it helps the state change their teaching requirements and sets their focus on what students need to improve on.
The state requires students to take multiple standardized tests throughout their schooling, but they need to consider what percentage of students do well and then make a conclusion as to what they can improve. I think that if standardized tests didn’t cause so much pressure on the students then the percentage of students who do well would increase. I also believe that they are unnecessary for college admissions though and that colleges should look at the academic improvement in high school
