What Is Tahlia's Sorrow?
Sorrow has its own happiness
It is her sixteenth birthday.
Tahlia used to celebrate birthdays with her family in a small intimate party at her house in her her hometown. Tahlia’s city is not as peaceful as Pittsburgh, where she is living right now; it is crowded with people and motorbikes. On her birthday, there were no candles or any special presents. There were only her parents, her brother and Tahlia. With only four people, Tahlia’s family is loud most of the time. The happy family talked about random stories, and random stories are endless. Tahlia’s birthday is not an exception.
This year’s birthday is really quiet.
She has always imagine about her first sorrowful birthday without her family. Tahlia does have some friends, but she does

Tahlia came to this school as a junior, in which she is the newbie to this class. She was a little worried that people had formed a special bond since their freshmen and sophomore year. Luckily, Tahlia has made some good friends, whom surprisingly do not share any same character with her. One of her close friends is really loud and super-extroverted.

Her friends, including Ashley, Aykay, Katherine and Lucy, take her out for dinner today to celebrate her special day. Tahlia is excited to come. Ashley would pay for her dinner as a special present. Foods are always the top choice whenever come to present. They go to “Lee”, an Asian restaurant, for her birthday party.
Tahlia is a little worried if her friends would tell jokes and she cannot be truly involved in it. The language barrier still exists. Tahlia still feels not involved whenever they discuss about a TV show series since sheI has no idea about what it is. Or when they laugh about a joke that she cannot understand why they laugh. She feels different and separated. At the same time, the little girl appreciates that they choose to befriend with her, a new international student who still has problem when she

They can talk for hours about silly stories that only us can understand. They love the same TV show series. They choose the same Korean drama to watch. They have secrets that only them keep it to one another.

Ashley, Aykay and I discuss about food we might order when we get to “Lee”. It is an Asian restaurant, so maybe I can get some Asian food I want on my birthday, which might make me feel less homesick somehow. Still, I miss the flavor of my favorite noodle soup that my mom usually makes it in the weekend for our family. Our family ate noodles last year for my birthday. I love the food my mom makes. My mom’s foods have a distinct flavor, which for me, no famous restaurants’ food can be compared with. It is the flavor of love, care and memories.
We have arrived. The noisy atmosphere in the restaurant makes me want to go home. I’d prefer a quiet space rather than a crowded space full of people that I have no idea who they are.
Lucy and Katherine are waiting inside, along with a balloon with the line “Happy Birthday” on it. I’m a little surprised that they are here

American Author Zane Gray once stated “I hate birthdays.” Perhaps he said this because he has had a bad experience with birthdays. Maybe he simply doesn’t like celebrating something as frivolous as a birthday. Personally, I concur with Mr. Gray’s statement, I too, hate birthdays. Even though the vast majority of the population enjoy their birthday and most likely consider it their favorite holiday, birthdays do not appeal to me however because of, my past natal day experiences, the annoyance of the annual overhyped celebrations, and my fear of being disappointed again.…

Food has always been something I enjoyed and looked forward to at any event or occasion. Each dish I ever encounter always finds a way into my heart. Over the years as I indulge in the consistent, irresistible tastes of food, I am always reminded of where my love for food originated. As I scroll back in time to find where this unknown passion for food sparked, I am always taken back to my grandmother’s Thanksgiving meal. This meal has shown me what it means to be comforted and to feel a sense of well-being. Even though every thanksgiving meal is the same, the meal is always like a gift to me that I can’t wait to open. Never have I ever felt this way about food. With this meal I have learned so much about myself and I have shared many memories.…

The clattering of plates and the clicking of heels on a tile floor are the white noise of the restaurant. Kitchen partners rush to get the next salad ready, the next steak cooking. The expeditors keep the restaurant working smoothly, the source of communication between the front of the house and the kitchen. A business partner shouts “Corner!” as she rounds the bend between the kitchen and the hallway leading to the general area of the restaurant. Two servers see each other for the first time during their shift and exchange a quick “How are you?” without stopping long enough to hear the reply of their co-worker. A manager explains the goals of the evening to a group of distracted employees in the pass-through, watching a rush of customers enter through the double glass doors. The restaurant lifestyle is a unique discourse with success resulting from the quality of customer service and understanding the value of time-saving efficiency.…

Food is something we all enjoy. It contains the essentials to sustaining life such as nutrients, fat and protein. But in a culture where shared meals are not that common as they once were, food also can create everlasting memories and connections with the people we hold the dearest. Bonny Wolf wrote a short essay called, “ Food Traditions: The Thread That Links Generations”, in which she states that, “Food binds families together, keeps generations connected and creates community” (Wolf 136). I strongly agree with this statement because not only do I have a treasure trove of memories all linked to food and family but also because there is so much evidence that provides back up for this claim.…

It was Tuesday, March first, 2011, my mother woke me up so I can start getting ready for school. I rose with eager anticipation, just four more days until my thirteenth birthday and I just couldn’t wait. I brushed my teeth and hurried down to eat the complimentary breakfast offered to us by the hotel we were staying at. You see we had been staying at a hotel for the past five months because the home we had been renting was foreclosed on so the utility companies turned off the power and the electricity. We had to get down at just the right time so that there was a small crowd but a lot of food so that we can take food back to the room to save for dinner. After breakfast, we…

Immediately upon walking through the difficult to open double doors, the staunch odor of excessive butter fills my nostrils and causes me to ponder vomiting. A nacho cheese type stench mixes with the butter giving me an image of clogged arteries and high blood pressure. The candy behind the glass counter further adds to the 'heart attack waiting to happen' aura of this place. An air conditioning vent at the top of the wall is located perfectly in front of the bench I sit on and constantly blasts me in the face causing me to feel frigid. The horrific fabric on the bench feels like sandpaper. The voices of the dozens of people around me create a decibel level that…

    Eleven by Sandra Cisneros

A short story ‘Eleven’ by Sandra Cisneros dwells upon the memories of an eleven-year-old girl that spends her birthday at school and gets into a discomforting situation with her teacher because of her lack of confidence. In spite of the multiple colloquial phrases and childish expressions, this is a very philosophical piece of writing. It touches upon such global and adult issues as experience, freedom, aging, life and death, knowledge and restrictions. The symbolism is very sophisticated here – under the veiled mask of a simple classroom occasion the writer sets multiple questions. Do people gather enough experience with age? What secret knowledge and power is revealed after each birthday? Can a simple life situation drive one at an older age more efficiently than real calendar time does? The complexity of an eleven-year-old girl (who is almost a teenager, by the way) is derived from the first-person style of narration. The author tries to hide her real wisdom and age through the expressions like “little animal noises” but it still seems not convincing because so many serious questions are being asked in each paragraph of the story. She is very capable in understanding her own emotions and thoughts – an ability that is not very typical for such a young age is eleven. Her descriptions of the surrounding world are very clear and comprehensive; the usage of metaphors is quite mature in spite of the phrasing.…

We headed into San Francisco early. I was surprised that there wasn’t very much traffic; I guess we were after the morning rush hour. The drive north was almost as pretty as the drive down the coast. California should be “The Natural State”, not Arkansas! Once we made it into the city, we had to cross the Golden Gate Bridge. As we emerged from Golden Gate Park, the goliath appeared before us. We just crossed it both ways, but I was in awe of how big the bridge actually was. I had never appreciated it until I saw it with my own eyes. When we came back into the city, we drove around to many of the different neighborhoods. San Francisco is incredibly diverse. We drove through “Little Japan” and “China Town”, and we parked in North Beach. North Beach is where an established population of people with Italian heritage lives and work, “Little Italy” in any other big city. We were craving some good Italian food, and we definitely found some. The restaurant didn’t have a name on their sign, but we risked it and stopped there to eat. It was authentic Italian food from scratch. They made their own noodles, sauces, bread, and dressings. The dish I had was the best Italian food I’d ever eaten. My dad felt the same way about his dish as well. After our delicious lunch, we decided to drive around the city a little while longer, and then head back to the hotel so we didn’t get stuck in rush hour…

    Friends: Leslie

Friends are people whom we turn to when our spirits need a lift. They are always by our side through thick and thin. They stand beside us even when our disposition is not perfectly right and will fight for us if we are oppressed. Therefore, it is clear that friends play a vital role in shaping who we are today. But what qualities exactly do we need to look for in a friend? That is why I have decided to write an essay about The New Girl. This story circles around five friends Amy, Bella, Chloe, Daisy and Emily. They called themselves the ABCDE girls. They were bosom friends ever since primary school. Anyway, these five girls loved each other dearly. One day, Emily saw a notice on the board. It read that anyone interested in joining a talent competition, could hand in their names. She quickly gathered up her friends and broke the news to them. All five girls decided to do a dance.…
