Descartes has stated that there is no way for sure to know what is real and what actually exists, one must think for themselves and doubt a lot before accepting it, possibly everything. In the short story “Memento Mori” Earl did not do that, all he did was act on his past thoughts written on notes without questioning it, he did not doubt his own past thoughts that he could not remember. In a sense Earl did not exist, he was long gone and forgotten, it was a new Earl everytime, driven by blind hatred and revenge of the past Earl.
