Peasants had a certain way to live life and once you were born into the a peasant household or family you had to stay in the family. “The peasant class included Freemen, who has some rights, land serfs, who had no rights, and slaves, who were bought and sold” (Newman). Peasants had to realize that having some rights or no rights at all was a part of who they were. “Freeman were poor farmers who had control of small portions of land. Freeman usually made just enough money to live on” (Newman). Freemen had to accomplish all of the life’s necessities so there was never any money to waste. “Serfs had no political power and were not allowed having control of property. They lived on the property of a noble vassal, and in order to repay the vassal for letting the serf live on his property the serf worked the land and was at the disposal of the vassal” (Newman). Serfs were extremely poor that they could not own their own property; they had to work and live on someone’s land that was higher up than they were. “Serf: Peasant worker on a manor whose position was hereditary and who could not leave the manor without the landlord’s permission” (Corrick 101). Serfs had no say in what they could and couldn’t do or how their life went because they were born into the family, and it was their destiny. “Serfs had to work as menial labor while peasants could live free doing their own chosen business” (ask about this).
