This practice signifies the relationship each person has with God. The third pillar, Zakat, is considered one of the most important tenets of Islam. It maintains that all things belong to God, and as such human beings are the trustees of such wealth. Zakat is the practice of charity that requires all Muslims who can, to contribute a fixed amount to the poor. The fourth pillar is that of fasting, otherwise known as Sawm; all Muslims are obliged to fast during the month of Ramadan. Fasting entails abstaining from eating, drinking, smoking and sex from dawn until sunset, instead committing to the reading of the Qur’an. The fifth and final pillar is the pilgrimage to the Holy city of Mecca, referred to as Hajj.
