Those of us in this generation are not unintelligent or “dumb” at all if anything we’ve expanded our knowledge, with new technology aiding by our side. Using these innovations, our learning techniques have substantially improved, and because we use these to our advantage, that doesn’t make anyone any less intelligent than our elders. As said by Sharon Begley, a science columnist, “there is no empirical evidence that being immersed in instant messaging, texting, iPods, video games and all things online impairs thinking ability.” (Source 2) Therefore, technology isn’t able to corrupt our thinking. It is our own will to let it have an effect on us and how we are willing to educate ourselves. So, it is true to say that “the outcome emerges through exploration, in contrast to classroom learning that is oriented toward set, predefined goals” (source 4) because of this new opportunity to use the internet and communication with others to achieve more knowledge and learn new things. When Bauerlein commented on this generation, what he might not have known was “IQ scores in every country that measures them, including the United States, have been rising since the 1930s.” (Source 2) and Gen Y’s “ignorance” “reflects not dumbness but choice.” (Source 2) As stated before, the people of this time have their own free will.
