The author uses imagery when he gives many descriptive details about what is happening which allows the reader to create their own image of the story. For example, the details he uses while walking through the catacombs like “the drops of moisture trickle among the bones “gives the reader a sense of what it felt like walking through them. Another great example of imagery would be when the author states “Its walls had been lined with human remains piled to the vault overhead in …show more content…
the fashion of the greatest catacombs of Paris”. The amount of of description the author provides for us is plenty to create that suspenseful feel the characters felt themselves, while walking through the catacombs. It also helps foreshadows the ending of the story. Not only does the author use plenty of imagery in the story but he also uses irony to create the tone/ mood. Irony is another literary device the author really uses to create the suspenseful and frightening tone/ mood of the story.
For instance, when he states “My poor friend found it impossible to reply for many minutes” he does not literally mean it. In this case Montresor wants revenge for the “thousand injuries” Fortunato caused him by acting as if they were great friends. He wants to make Fortunato feel this way only to make it easier for himself to finish what he set himself to do. Another example of irony would be when Montresor states “ My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day.” Montresor, from the moment he begins speaking to him, acts polite so Fortunato does not suspect anything. It creates that suspense that makes the reader think of what Montresor will do for revenge. In other words Montresor is being a hypocrite to be able to achieve what he wants to do. Imagery and irony are important because without them the story would be a lot less suspenseful and would be more
blunt. In this story, the author wanted us to learn that even though people cause you harm, revenge is the never the answer. Revenge is a dish bed of cold. It can be satisfying at first but you will have to carry with that guilt until the day you die. In the final analysis, the author uses great irony and imagery to create his amazing writings.
