At the beginning of the story we are met with a very big issue. A couple of white men had followed the Berry’s, which are two black men, when they left the store. They followed them to their uncle’s house and then dragged both of them, including the uncle, outside and set them on fire. The reason they burnt them was because they had supposedly been flirting with a white women. This shows you how cruel they were back in these days. The Berry’s ended up dying; one of them was killed instantly and the other two were burnt so severely that they ended up dying later. When she went to Strawberry with her grandma she was at the store with Stacey and T.J. The gentlemen at the store was helping them. Then when white people walked in he helped them first. Cassie did not like that he was doing that and confronted him about and got screamed at. This is very important because Cassie learns that she does not come first in this time period, and that she will have to wait for many things in her life. When Cassie left she is met with another problem. She runs into Lillian Jene on the sidewalk. Lillian then told her to walk in the road, not the sidewalk. When she refuses Mr. Simms, Lillian’s dad, grabs Cassie and throws her on the ground. She was not expecting this and took it as a surprise. When Mr. Simm’s throws her down we see all the racial prejudice come out right then. In time today we would not see man shove a young girl down and not get in trouble for it. This shows us that most whites have no respect and will do whatever they can to feel like they have power over
