Making a temporary society was the first thing that was accomplished. Ralph and Piggy met and went to the lagoon side of the island, they found a conch and Ralph blew it, attracting all the boys that were on the plane when the pilot had to drop them off the burning airship. When everyone gathered Ralph was appointed Chief, against, Jack, leader of the choir boys, wishes. He felt he should be the Chief, even though he was appointed leader of the hunters. Throughout the book, fire was a signal to passing vessels that the boys were stranded on the island. When Jack created his tribe and took everyone but Ralph, Piggy, Sam n’ Eric, and a few littluns, the fire also served as a sense of comfort and security to the few. In the end, it wasn't the fire they so painfully kept up that saved them. It was when Jack’s savaged tribe attempted to capture Ralph, and in return set everything on fire.
