What Is The Moral Of The Story A & P
As individuals we are evolving and progressing each and every day. The roads that are traveled during these transformations can be smooth or rocky depending on the choices we make. The story A&P written by John Updike takes place in a grocery store in little town America where the main character Sammy is faced with a moral and complex situation when the store manager Mr Lengel throws out 3 young women who are wearing only bathing suites. This story is in fact a microcosm of growing up for Sammy. All decision making has consequences many of which can have a negative impact on our lives, it is these choices however that shape us as individuals. The story really made Sammy reflect on his life and represented a transformation into adulthood.

It was more than just asking the girls to leave it was more or less insulting Sammy’s dream at the same time. This liberal lifestyle outside of little town America is what Sammy cherished and forced him to make decisions that would affect his future based off his moral compass. Up until this point it would appear everything was handed to Sammy and he was not involved in decision making that affected his own life. He had said when speaking about Mr Lengel “ He’s been a friend of my parents for years.” This would lead me to believe that his parents had played a part in getting Sammy’s employment. When Sammy had decided enough was enough and chose to tell Mr Lengel he quit this was life altering. It was at this very moment Sammy had taking his first step into adulthood and had say in his own life. He was very nervous when carrying out his decision to leave but he stated “once you begin a gesture it’s fatal not to go through with it”. It was at this very moment Sammy started to realize that all decisions and life choices we make have consequences whether they be small and minor or life altering. It’s these very choices that help build us as individuals. He knew once he put his apron on the counter it was officially over and it was time for him to start to make decisions that were going to make him happy. He was very nervous about his future and how it would play out and described this when saying “ Lengel in my place in the slot, checking the sheep through. His face was dark gray and his back stiff, as if he’d just had an injection of iron, and my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me
