What Is The Poltergeist Phenomenon?
Whether you side with the spiritual side or the scientific side, the poltergeist phenomenon is one that is difficult to wrap your mind around. There are many things revolving this phenomenon that are still unknown. Thanks to the curiosity sparked up in the minds of the dubious, we are not so much in the dark in regards to this phenomenon. Poltergeists were present in the hauntings of Amityville, and they exist among us. It is wrong to view the stories of the families that lived in the Amityville house as a hoax because it is clear that there are outside forces that we are not all well informed about; and just because we are ill-informed, does not make them any less

In 1979, when Frank D’Amico was staying in the mansion his wife experienced something rather bizarre. It was late in the night and she was preparing to climb into her bed when she saw what looked like a dark figure standing at the foot of her bed. It seemed to be coming straight towards her in a strange gliding motion. Panicking, she found the lamp on her bedside table and turned it on. As the light flickered, it illuminated all corners of the bedroom and there was nobody there. Whatever dark figure that had sent chills down her spine had vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.…

Poltergeist activity, contrary to the Hollywood view, probably is not caused by ghosts or spirits at all, but by the mental energies of living humans. Research has shown that such activity usually centers around one person in a home who is experiencing great physical or emotional stress and is released as mysterious knockings, disappearing objects and even the physical movement of objects. This is the theory held by most researchers today, so it's a bit confusing when Southall writes that the intelligent nature of poltergeist activity "would add credence to the idea that poltergeists are actually a form of spirit."…

    The Bingham Light

My mom and stepdad took my brother and I and some other family members down to the woods one night, as we all wanted to see the infamous Bingham light. It seemed like we walked forever in the woods until we came upon a clearing in the middle of the woods. It was only about a mile though, where we had to stand and shout out John Bingham’s name until the light appeared. As we were shouting out his name, low and behold a light in the distance appeared. It was far off but you could continuously see it moving closer and closer to us. The temperature changed. It didn’t get hotter but cooler. It was very scary to be in the middle of the woods to start off with, then to see this light coming toward us even after we stopped calling his name was terrifying. We didn’t stand around for it to get to close to us. We all started running as fast as we could out of those woods. There was loud screaming coming from all of us. I remember crying and hanging on to my mom for dear life. When we got out of the woods we looked back and the light was gone. We then began to laugh. No one can say if there really is a ghost out there in those woods or if we let our imagination get the best of us. It could even be someone else playing…

Based on our reading of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” people of 1790 may have been more superstitious or more likely to believe in ghosts than people today because the people of 1790 had no scientific explanations to what was going on around them. So, they made up these ideas to give them an answer or explanation. Today we have technology and a lot of scientific research, so we can tell if something is fake or not real when these ideas come into our heads. In 1790, they also didn’t know that some of the noises they hear may be a trees or bushes in the wind. They lived in small towns and told stories to make up…

The main thing is, why don’t they just leave? The answer in the best haunted house literature is, they don’t leave because they cannot. Something keeps them inside. When someone takes on a house they form a bond between self and architecture. Houses are where people have to go when they are trying to hide. This makes it all the more terrifying when the houses turn on us. Our houses are everywhere.…

Just because something seems not so realistic, doesn’t mean it can only be explained by paranormal reasons. It’s an example of the appeal to ignorance. Just because you can’t show that the supernatural or paranormal explanation is false doesn’t mean that it is true. Unfortunately, although this reasoning is logically fallacious, it is psychologically compelling.…

Paranormal activity has been a hot topic worldwide for decades. Horror movies, novels, and television shows have been based on myths, legends, and even stories that are claimed to be true. Since many choose to watch or read about ghosts, there is debate over the authenticity of the stories and the existence of apparitions altogether. Author Joe Nickell, a stage magician, private investigator, and journalist argues that his experience with apparitions proves that paranormal accounts are entirely false, specifically involving notoriously haunted hotels, inns, and other lodgings. He offers several premises to debunk the ghostly accounts of people worldwide, using quotes and analysis from a variety of researchers and also his own personal encounters.…

Originally, the governess takes the job at Bly for the money and because she is interested in the uncle. However, once she begins her job and starts looking after the children she becomes extremely invested in her job, she even starts to become obsessive over the children and does not spend much time without them, “Let me add that in their company now—and I was very careful almost never to be out of it—I could follow no scent very far” (63). Also once she starts to “see” the ghosts, she starts watching over the children more closely, even to the extent of staying awake until the children are safe and sleeping. Because of this, the governess begins to lose sleep. The governess even says to herself that she has not had much sleep (108). Since she says this, it is possible that she is becoming so tired, from keeping such a close eye on the kids, that she is starting to see things and convince herself that there are things, or people, there, that really are not, like the ghosts. Throughout the novel the governess becomes very obsessive and possessive over the children, and this could be one of the reasons that she makes the ghosts up. If the ghosts are there and they are trying to take away the children, she…
