In the small town of Dillon South Carolina was a small community called Bingham. As a child we were told many stories of the Bingham Light. Ghostly haunting stories by many were told about the farmer John Bingham and how he haunted the woods. This is a short story of my experience. According to legend, which changes from generation to generation, the farmer tried to warn an oncoming train with his lantern of the broken train tracks, which resulted in him being decapitated and he is still looking for his head. Others say he murdered many and buried them by the railroad tracks. The train tracks are no longer there. Some people say as you walk closer towards the glowing light it gets hotter, changes colors, and chances you. My mom and stepdad took my brother and I and some other family members down to the woods one night, as we all wanted to see the infamous Bingham light. It seemed like we walked forever in the woods until we came upon a clearing in the middle of the woods. It was only about a mile though, where we had to stand and shout out John Bingham’s name until the light appeared. As we were shouting out his name, low and behold a light in the distance appeared. It was far off but you could continuously see it moving closer and closer to us. The temperature changed. It didn’t get hotter but cooler. It was very scary to be in the middle of the woods to start off with, then to see this light coming toward us even after we stopped calling his name was terrifying. We didn’t stand around for it to get to close to us. We all started running as fast as we could out of those woods. There was loud screaming coming from all of us. I remember crying and hanging on to my mom for dear life. When we got out of the woods we looked back and the light was gone. We then began to laugh. No one can say if there really is a ghost out there in those woods or if we let our imagination get the best of us. It could even be someone else playing tricks on people. I don’t know if people still go out to those woods now or not but I will never forget my trip out to those woods, and my family and I never went back. Once was enough for us. The truth is we did see that light that night. Our small town in notorious for this light. I am sure some people stories of the light is a lot different than mine. Whatever the case may be, looking back I am sure I will never do that again. I love going to horror shows and haunted houses, but taking myself out into the middle of the woods at night, nope that will not happen. There are stories like these in a lot of small towns I am sure. As it gets closer to Halloween, you will hear people tell all kinds of stories about different places and things that happen. Who knows which ones are true or false? Would you like to take a trip to the small town of Bingham and find out for yourself?
