by opening a business for a spa that is eco-friendly that goes with or without the grant. The reason for the spa is because after a one night of saving the homecoming queen from a disaster everyone in Old Mill looked up to Lucy for all different kinds of tips on beauty. Lucy’s best friend, Sunny and her brother Yamir help her dream become a reality by spreading the news that Lucy is giving girls tips on makeup and can even do it for them. When Lucy finally convinces her mom and grandma about the grant, suddenly they win the grant which the whole Desberg family did not expect to happen. Lastly, in My Life in Pink and Green Lucy calls her soon to be spa Pink and Green, and her biggest goal comes true which is not treated like a young adult and not a baby.
This is the part of the book shows what the theme is and really makes the reader think about the message:
“All this is good. But it's not great. Deep down, I'd hoped that with the brochure, Mom and Grandma would take me so seriously that they'd really have hope for the grant and the spa, but that hasn't happened. Grandmas still on the phone with flo and Morrie all the time. She's even cashed in a CD, whatever that means”(Greenwald 225).
Additionally, without this passage the reader would have never gotten the lesson from My Life in Pink and Green. The theme of the novel is that people have to fight for what they believe in, even if everyone around them tells them to give up or doesn't. This was demonstrated when Lucy’s mom and grandma yelled at her to just give up on the pharmacy and just mind her own business. Once, Lucy finally decided that she had enough with her grandma and mom pushing her out of the problem she decides to help out even if it means doing it behind their backs. Also this is when Lucy finally decides that even though she is afraid of what is about to come she still has faith that her plain will work. Lastly, with this passage the reader would have never seen Lucy being true to herself and sticking with a plan that she believes in and seeing her not being a quitter. Moving on, towards the middle of the book Lucy was faced with an external conflict, coming from her grandma and mom choosing between just following their rules and give up or believing in herself, knowing that she can save the pharmacy.
Throughout the book, lucy is faced by her mom and grandma telling her to mind her business and that she can't save the pharmacy. Lucy didn't listen to her grandma and mom after she was told to just give up.Towards the end of the book Lucy is faced with listening to what her mom is telling her to do or doing what she believes in.At the end of the book, for example, Lucy is faced with just accept with her mom and grandma said or try harder to prove to them that they are wrong. Lucy shouts to Grandma, “Selling the store is such a stupid idea! Then what are you gonna so with yourselves all day ? You’ll end up like Nicole Grey's mother, who's totally depressed because she has nothing to do! I'm yelling, and i want to stop, but I can't . I feel like nothing I do will convince them, none of my ideas will work. I wish i didn't care about this stuff, but I do”(Greenwald 226). This shows that even if someone has forces that are putting them down, that there is always a solution. Lucy knew if she did give up all her hard work was for nothing and that her mom and grandma were right. Since, Lucy did stick with her gut she saved her family business. However, if Lucy did follow her mom there soon would have been no Old Mill …show more content…
Pharmacy.
In addition, the important setting from the novel was Old Mill Pharmacy since that is where most of the events took place. Old Mill Pharmacy is a place where people go to get their candy before going to the movie theater and is just a small store that people go to when they want products that are cheap. Throughout My Life in Pink and Green that is where Lucy has the best and worst events happen to her. At the end of the end of the book Jane (Lucy’s mom)and grandma get in a huge fight. Grandma roars at Jane, ”Jane, I am sick sick of you! Sick, sick, sick. Why don't you just get another job somewhere else? I’ll do fine without you. Grandma’s not really a mean person, but sometimes she says really mean things. And things that don't even make sense; it was Grandma's Idea that Mom go back to school to become a pharmacist and work”(243). This showed that Lucy wasn't the only one who feels that no one else believes in you, but her mother does from grandma. This is where Lucy’s mom finally understood what Lucy was feeling and how it could destroy your confidence. On the other hand, if Lucy didn't see this happen she would have known that the Old Mill Pharmacy closing wasn't just affecting her but everyone else around her.
To begin with, in My Life in Pink and Green there are many universal conflicts. The most important one is foreclosure. This happens everywhere in world and this is sometimes that people make money and with their store they could become homeless or poor. In the beginning of My Life in Pink and Green Greenwald wrote,” “THREE DELINQUENTS MORTGAGE PAYMENTS. What does this mean? That we haven't paid the morgage for three month? Or that the payments weren't enough? The next sentence: YOU ARE IN DANGER OF FORECLOSURE” (Greenwald 8). This shows that any business can close down any time and place. To add on, events in books aren't just stories for people who have lived through them but are actually there lives.
To conclude, I recommend this to people who like books that could happen in real life.
The reason I say this is because the events in this book could totally happen to anyone in real life. At the end of the book, Lucy shows how one business closed right nextdoor. For example, at the very end of the book Greenwald writes, “Eli Mayner owned the video store next door to the pharmacy for many, many years, but the store closed down last year, since pretty much rents their DVDs online now. He still owns the building, though, and that's why we’re trying to make a deal with him. It was sad when the store closed business. He bought a Web site that offers cheaper ways to rent cars and hire movers and even buy plane tickets. Grandma says he’s doing very well.”(257)In others words, this shows that even their next door neighbor had to deal with foreclosure which didn't turn out so bad for him. Also I rate this book a 8.5 because the way the Greenwald writes the book is so easy to read and at the same time so much is going on and the reader can really see how actors are really feeling. Also the way she makes her character like a real person and doesn't act like a fictional character. For instance, when Greenwald wrote, ”Mom! I'm not going to say it again. Thay woman ruined my hair! I don't care about a refund. Homecoming is tonight. Tonight! Do you know what that means?....Under Courtney's baseball cap isa mop of frizzed-out thick, tangled strawberry-blonde hair. Well, the top is
strawberry blonde: the bottom is green. If you can fix this, then you're a miracle worker, Courtney says”(27). Finally, when the reader reads this quote the reader can feel how overwhelmed and stress Courtney is feeling and while freaking out the reader can understand everything that is happening.
