From the time that the jews arrived at the camp, everything started to occur very fast which caused everyone to be extremely confused and worried. Adults and children were being thrown left and right into big groups of people and nobody understood what was going on. The SS soldiers would hold their rifles and hit around people to where they were wanted. First, the jews got separated into two lines, the male line, and the female line. After they finished that then they began to start the selection process. The Jews who were considered fit for work were sent inside the camp and the Nazis began to shave their heads and then sent to the barracks. The Germans created a hair collection from the Jews in Auschwitz. They used this hair for felt liners inside boots for troops, railway personnel in the cold weather and spun into yarn for socks. The Nazis checked the hair for lice to make sure that the camp guards do not have lice carrying typhus. The barracks were the beds that the Jews stayed in. The beds were stacked on one another and stored in a room like animals. Those ranged from 14 to about 30 were sent to work and the others were sent to their death. Those jews were forced to work day to night as slaves. The “lucky ones” worked for a German factory for war effort. The Germans opened up 96 factories for the jews to work at. Those people did not get killed because they were working for the Germans. In areas that were controlled by the Germans, the Nazis picked out jewish labors for terrible treatment. The Nazis did not care as much about getting the job done, they cared more about killing the jews. The Nazis liked to have “fun with the jews” One quarry had a straight shear wall, called the “paratroopers wall” and every once in a while, a Nazi would push a jew off. At the Auschwitz labor camps first the jews would remove sacks of cement from train wagons. Each sack weighed about 50 lbs. The Jewish labors would carry two to three at a time on their back. They wanted to prove to the Germans that they are strong and deserve to live. Some of the workers stole the empty sacks to wear as another layer of clothing when it was very cold outside. The people who decided to steal the sacks got big punishments by the Nazis when they found out. They were punished by standing in between barbed wire for eight hours. Not many survived considering the jews conditions before the punishment. The jewish labors were as well forced to clean up dead jews bodies. That was when the labors found out how many jews had died and it was very upsetting to them.
