Annis, my middle school Language Arts teacher. I can vividly remember passionately reading from my young adult novels whenever a moment of peace presented itself. Every Friday Mrs. Annis asked us to turn in reading logs that we had a week to complete. The expectations for full points was at least fifteen minutes or ten pages read each day. I received full marks and thought this was as far as the reading logs value went. Each semester the middle school teachers granted awards in their respective subjects to recognize excellent students. Mrs. Annis explained that I had won her award because I had read more pages than any seventh or eighth grader. During the three remaining semesters of middle school, I increased my record and won each time. When I promoted eighth grade Mrs. Annis confided that she believed she had never, and would never, see such an avid reader again. I built in a routine to guarantee there was also time for some pleasurable reading. Each night I adhere to a schedule of reading one or two chapters of a fictional novel. According to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy (2014), routines are repetitive and observable behaviors that cannot be separated from their cultural context. My favorite genre has always been fantasy, but in the past 5 weeks, I have begun to notice that this is the sole genre I desire to read. This performance pattern includes reading young adult fantasy novels far below my comprehension level because they calm my mind and ensure that my reading doesn’t act as a stressor.
