In the eighteenth century, Britain was involved in many wars against the French. These wars turned out to be very expensive and caused the French crown to go bankrupt. Britain knew how expensive these wars were so they looked to America to help with the costs. For the next twelve years after the Seven Years War ended in 1763, Britain tried to tax the Americans, but the Americans wouldn't pay. their efforts only led to the Revolutionary War.
Taxes weren't the only thing that King George the Third was doing to the American people though.
The King also greatly affected their legislative powers. He wouldn't let people be elected, he caused innocent people to be convicted of crimes that they didn't commit, and he even made it so laws couldn’t be passed without his consent, but when the time would come for the law to be passed, the King wouldn’t show up. He would also call the legislative bodies together when he knew that the officers couldn't show up without difficulty.
The American people tried time and time again to find a solution and mention it to the King, but he only answered with more tyranny. He burned their towns and killed their people, and he even violated the circumstances regarding emigration and settlement. When the American people realized that nothing they were doing was going to change the way Britain was acting, they decided to take things into their own hands. Thus, the Declaration of Independence was created.
The Declaration of Independence was a very important document for the Americans. They were being treated very unfairly by the King so, in my opinion, the Americans made the right choice by declaring separation from England. The Americans put up with a lot of tyrannies before they decided to declare independence. King George the Third was a very unfair man and unfit to rule the “free” people of
America.
