What Role Do Judges Play In The Criminal Justice System
In any country, the criminal justice system plays a very important role in controlling crime and carry out penalties on individuals who violate laws. In the United State “there is no single criminal justice system but rather many similar, individual systems. How the criminal justice system works in each area depend on the jurisdiction that is in charge; city, county, state, federal or tribal government or military installation. Different jurisdictions have different laws, agencies, and ways of managing criminal justice processes. First, in the criminal justice just judges play several roles. In various criminal cases and civil cases are heard by judge with or without juries. There are numeral factors that a judge takes into account when deciding the appropriate punishment for an individual convicted of a crime. Judges understand the laws and know how to excite the laws in an appropriate manor. In the courtroom judges evaluate evidences presented and control how hearings unfold in their courtrooms. Most importantly, judges decide whether the evidence presented in his or her courtroom reliable and if a witness is telling the truth. In addition, “the judge passes sentence, imposing a penalty that can range from a fine to a prison term depending on the severity of the offense. In civil cases the judge decides whether a claim is valid and assesses damages, grants an injunction or orders some other form of redress to the plaintiff, unless a jury has been empaneled to make these decisions” (BBC News, 2007). Although judges follow the laws and steps there are some citizens who think that judges don’t give the right amount of punishment to any defendant.
