I believe that when it comes to designing and leading a group, one should have a clear understanding of several theoretical orientations, and then choose different concepts that could benefit the group work process. For instance, developing your counseling approach, based on a single theory, can help leaders to become masters at using certain techniques based on their own personality, strengths, and beliefs. However, focusing on a single approach can leave behind developmental areas (thought, emotions, behaviors) that should be kept in mind when working with a range of clients. In my view, my own cultural/ethical background explains a lot of who I am, and will impact my work as a counselor. Respecting my own clients’ cultural background, and becoming actively aware of any possible biases and prejudices will help me maintain an ethical and effective counseling relationship with clients, families, and society.
b. What are your thoughts about how change happens?
I believe that change will only happen if one is ready, and willing to change. I do believe that environmental factors as well emotions and thought patterns will have a direct impact on the way changes occur. Here is when developing new thinking processes and modifying the environment play an important role, however, without true disposition to make new changes, the accomplishments will not be meaningful.
c. What do you believe about how people heal? In what context do people heal? What must be present for people to heal? What methods work to help people heal?
Personally, I think that the healing process should be seen as a long and difficult one.
