What Was The Progressive Era

During 1900-1916 was a period known as The Progressive Era. An era of progressive reforms and expansion. The Progressive Era is also called as a Progressive Movement, a movement that changed America and cured the American society. “The word “Progressive” came into common use around 1910 as a way of describing a broad, loosely defined political movement of individuals and groups who hoped to bring about significant change in American social and political life.” (Page 683”) Progressive Era can be labeled as a huge range of economic, social, and political reform. Progressives aimed to make the government more democratic. It all began with the Triangle shirtwaist fire, a milestone in labor history. The Triangle Fire is well known the worst infamous incident. On March 25, 1911, a fire occurred in a building. The building was located in New York City and belonged to the Triangle shirtwaist company. With the lack of safety and escape options it resulted in the deaths of around 145 workers, many were young women. Between 1901 and 1914 many immigrants from Italy, Russia, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire came to the United States., mostly for economic opportunities. Immigrants came seeking for employment and the wish of becoming rich. Many settled in New York City and were able to find jobs. It was difficult for the immigrants to adjust to United States but United States also had a hard time taking in the immigrants as well. The immigrants decided to move to United States with the thought of Freedom in their minds. They expected equal rights and doing anything as they wanted.
