How Did The Progressive Era Change Society
Life before the Progressive Era consisted of a more industrialized America. Along with this came poverty, violence, and greed. The Progressive Era was an attempt to address these issues that came with the rapid industrialization in the U.S. The people that supported this thought that the problem could be resolved by providing the population with a better education, ensuring a safer work environment, and a more productive workplace. The Progressive Era changed society by causing more people to move from rural areas to inner-city locations in search for better jobs and education. Also, factories started producing more goods than the population could consume. While the Progressive Era was a time for social growth, the Gilded Age was a time
for an increase in the economy. Rapid economic growth generated wealth during the Gilded Age. Most Americans during the Gilded Age wanted political and social reforms which can relate to the goal during the Progressive Era. The Gilded Age, however, tried to cover up the corrupt society with the wealth of the country during that time period. The country’s growing wealth during the Gilded Age made people want to acquire more land. This is essentially what Imperialism was. During Imperialism, the U.S. gained such territories as Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, along with others. This shows another way that America tried to ignore its issues with poverty throughout the country. These two time periods were how the U.S. tried to look more wealthy/successful than they actually were at that time. Imperialism was a cause for World War I. Before the war, Germany had a sudden growth in nationalism and started acquiring lots more land. This led to the Germans seeking European domination. Because of their sense of their own manifest destiny, it led to the conflicts that started World War I. One of these being the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. This European tragedy led to the start of the first world war. When World War I ended, the roaring 20s were the start of nationwide happiness in America. New inventions and discoveries were leading to an easier life. Inventions such as the washing machine became helpful to people’s everyday lives. People had a lot more free time. More and more people could afford accessories, and more things were being mass produced on the assembly line.
