characters were taken out, others were combined. In the book Andy is made out to be a short man but in the movie Andy is Tall. Red also was changed from being Irish to an African
American. Physically both actors didn't fit the role but in the movie they do a great job acting as Red and Andy. Bogs is another character that had been changed. In the book he was barely mentioned but in the movie he was one of the several sisters who were a group of men that were into rape, which
Andy had experienced. In the book there were three different wardens but in the movie they were combined into one person who was characterized as a rude, strict, and greedy for money. Another character difference between the movie and the film was old man Brook, the librarian. In the book he is released and ends up dying in an old age home, where as in the movie he hangs himself after he gets out because he doesn't think there was a life out of prison for him. This characterization of old man Brooks goes back to the theme of hope. Brooks suicide showing that he did not have any.
