Robert Frost, in his poem “A Dust of Snow,” reveals that surprising moments can pull us out of serious depressions. He establishes this idea first by using the symbolic meaning of crow to create unhappiness and darkness; second, by the diction of the word snow which would normally mean a slow accumulation, but in this poem, this man’s life has slowly come to the point where everything is bad for him; third, by the connotative use the hemlock tree which is a poisonous tree, but it is used to stirrup some good in the person’s situation; fourth, by ironically saying that the crow saved him and renewed hope and life to him; lastly, by the use of diction with the word rued which means regret, but in this poem, the crow stopped the man from doing…

Snow is a beautiful act of nature, yet it can go deadly in a matter of minutes. “The trees had closed the road in so that the sky was little more than an indistinct, drab ribbon overhead, but down here the dramatic expanse of it was visible, chaotic and fierce” (320). The islanders find the…

Poets and authors often use symbolism to convey deeper meanings than what lies on the surface of the text. They use seasons, analogies, allegories, common knowledge and even precipitation to pass along ideas. These symbols either enhance the surface text or lead the reader off into a new way of thinking about something. Various forms of precipitation and the ideas of baptism are prominent literary symbols that are utilized throughout the novel, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie.…

    Hard To Find Symbolism

Symbolism was found many times throughout the story. The first time I came around symbolism was when the family was talking about Toomsboro. Toomsboro sounds a lot like tomb so that symbolizes the eventual fate the family will soon meet. The next symbolism I found was when The Misfit’s car was going down the road towards the disoriented family. The car was described as “big black battered hearse-like automobile (145).” The reason that this is symbolism is because a hearse is what carries coffins to funerals. The Misfit’s car represents the intimate death that the family will soon meet. Lastly, the final symbolism is the cloudless, sunless sky. Most people would think that a day with no clouds would be a beautiful, happy day filled with fun; however, this family in the story thought that but it turned out to be their worst day. Usually when a murder takes place it happens at night when it is dark and no one is around. This murder happened on a beautiful day, but the main reason I brought up this is because when The Misfit shot the Grandmother, she feel back looking up towards the beautiful sky with a smile on her face. This symbol represents that the Grandmother found inner peace with herself.…

Symbols are everywhere, embodying meanings larger than life. One can find symbolism in music, literature, and even in decoration! They play huge roles in specific themes or emotions in certain situations. In “Masque of the Red Death”, by Edgar Allan Poe, death is personified, terror reigns, and tragedy strikes, as he tells a short tale of the infamous “Black Plague” that reigned over Europe in the middle ages, and how death is absolutely inevitable. In the story, Poe used an intense amount of symbolism within the seven colored chambers to establish the mood of the story, the seven stages of life, and to emphasize the terror of the situation.…

The purpose of tone in literate is to show how the author wants the reader to perceive the context. In the story “Let it Snow” the tone is a tool that the author uses to show the characters attitude towards being locked out of their own house. One of the sisters, Lisa exclaims this by saying that she is “pretty sure it was him who told on us.” The tone that the author is trying to bestow is that Lisa is being passive aggressive about the man. All that she was trying to do was get back into her house, but now this man tells on them. It is a loose loose situation, the characters are out in the cold, and when they try to make an effort to get back in their house this man does not help them. Like so many artists, Frost drew from his personal experiences as inspiration for his poetry. Frost is described by biographers as having “links between the events of Frost’s own life – a gothic chronicle of disasters – and the poetry”. (McQuade et al., 1999, p. 1901) Frost lost his father at a very early age. He was only 11 year old at the time of his father’s death. “But it was not only the early death of his father that convinced Frost of the evil in existence. His own first child died in infancy; his only son committed suicide; one daughter died after childbirth, and another was mentally ill; his embittered wife refused on her deathbed to admit him to her room”. (McQuade et al., 1999, p. 1901) Frost experienced a great deal of loss throughout his life and that loss is reflected in his work. That loss, however, is not always easily uncovered. Frost often masked the pain in his writings with symbolism and metaphors.…
