In the Frontline documentary “ When Kids Get Life” the narrator explained to us five different cases that occurred in the state of Colorado where these five teenage boys were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The United States is one of the only countries in the world that allows children under 18 to be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International report that more than 2,000 inmates are currently serving life without parole in the United States for crimes committed when they were juveniles; in the rest of the world, there are only 12 juveniles serving the same sentence, according to figures reported to the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child. The first case involves two friends, Nathan Ybanez and Erik Jensen. Teller County Sheriff calls the scene gruesome. Some would say that it was one of the most heinous crimes in Colorado in 1992, it was a double homicide. They described the crime scene as looking like a scuffle may have taken place, and quite a bit of blood lost. 15 year old Jacob Ind and his classmate brutally killed his mother and stepfather. Erik grew up in a secure , and affluent household; Nathan on the other hand grew up in an abusive one. The two classmates had only known each other for only a year and a half, and Nathan had killed his mother, another classmate that helped cover up the murders suggested that Erik took part in the killings as well. Erik's defense attorney states that being with somebody else who committed a murder and serving, probably, more fundamentally as an accessory, yet Erik was prosecuted also as an adult, but given life without parole in prison.
