The speaker goes into the river and sits to think. He cannot concentrate so he jumps into the water and sinks. He comes out of the water and cries out twice. If there was any more water, he would have died, he says, “But it was Cold in that water! It was cold!”(9) He goes in to an elevator and takes the sixteenth floor of his building, where he goes to thinks about his baby. The literary devices are very critical to making it so striking. The literary devices are alliteration, enjambment and repetition. Alliteration gives the poem it`s life and feel to it. After the near-death experiences, the poet says “So since I'm still here livin” to keep things positive in life. Repetition is used in the same means. The joy of life is set as the main idea. When he says, “Life is fine! Fine as wine! Life is fine!” By it being said twice, it shows that in even through the horrible times, the goal is towards the joys of life. The repetition in the poem is with all the ups and downs leading to an unsure importance of life theme. The last literary device I chose is enjambment. The thought of what is going to be said in every line. Langston Hughes states, “I could've died for love--But for livin' I was born”. The curiosity of him giving up everything just for love is looking over the whole message about how you should enjoy your life.
