Currently, there are fifteen subduction-related volcanoes active along the Cascade chain. Before 1980, the last one to erupt was Mt. Lassen in California, in 1914. In the mid-1970's scientists were concerned that Mt. Baker, in northern Washington, might be the site of the next volcanic eruption, based on increased activity on the volcano. However, in 1978, Dwight Crandell and Don Millineaux of the USGS suggested that Mt. St. Helens was potentially the most likely volcano to erupt in the twentieth century; based their evidence on the relatively young age of the volcano, and its frequent historical eruptions (Explore). Since about 1400 A.D., eruptions have occurred at approximately one every 100 years.…

Of all the naturally occurring events on Earth, earthquakes are among the most devastating and bring a lot of truth to the statement, “Just because something is natural does not mean it is not dangerous.” Earthquakes are one of the most natural things I can think of that can cause massive damage and loss of human live in many instances, and the effects are sometimes long term. “Nothing happens without a force. Many geophysicists accept the theory that continents move as a result of the forces generated by mantel convection deep within Earth – motions driven by our planet’s internal heat energy” (Trefil & Hazen, 2010). According to National Geographic (1996-2012), constant movement in the tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s crust causes an earthquake. The constant nature of this movement causes a buildup of energy, which is stored in rocks at fault lines. The stored energy is eventually released and a sudden, rapid shaking of the Earth is the result. “An Earthquake is what happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slip past one another” (Wald, 2009). An event cannot be more natural than the Earth itself actually causing it.…

A hazard can best be defined as a 'situation that poses a level of threat to life, health, property or the environment.' The overall impact of earthquakes as a natural hazard varies greatly from one place and timeframe to another. As do the types of hazards, which are categorised into primary and secondary. Primary hazards are created by the direct seismic energy of an earthquake; this could include liquefaction, slope failure and tsunamis. These primary hazards can in turn trigger secondary hazards such as floods, fires, disease and destabilisation of infrastructure. A number of factors play a part in determining the severity of these hazards.…

Land slides and Avalanches are one of the worlds most major natural hazard types. They kill between 25 and 50 people per year and cost the United States $3.5 billion to repair per year. Landslides are caused when soil is disrupted. For example when deforestation occurs it removes the roots from the soil. The soil can then not hold it self together so when it rains the soil becomes saturated and falls. They can also be triggered when earthquakes occur through soil slips or debris triggering it to move. Avalanches are caused by mass movement of snow or unstableness of snow. There are many reasons why areas experience high levels of avalanches or landslides. On…

There are two types of plates, oceanic and continental. Various types of movement occur along the different types of plate boundaries. Earthquakes measuring a magnitude of 1-6 are not that powerful; therefore, not much damage will be produced; however, earthquakes measuring of a magnitude of 6+ are going to be much more severe. In my opinion, Earthquakes present people with a more immediate danger and are more dangerous towards people than volcanoes, especially when cities and towns are affected. Also earthquakes have several aftershocks which a highly dangerous. An earthquake takes place when two different tectonic plates converge or transform against one another causing them to get stuck, the pressure then builds up for hundreds of years until one day the pressure releases causing earthquakes.…

First, devastating, and deadly natural disaster is a hurricane. In order for a hurricane to form it has to begin in a warm atmosphere. The seas are normally at their warmest from June to November. A hurricane requires sea- surface temperatures of at least 26 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit). This provides energy for the hurricane and causes more evaporation making humid air and clouds. The winds coming together force air upwards and winds flow outwards above the storm, allowing the air below to rise. Now this is what makes the storm and the light winds outside the hurricane steers it and this is how it grows into a formation of a hurricane. All hurricanes are dangerous and can cause numerous amounts of damage but the most dangerous parts of hurricanes are storm surges which also cause huge amounts of damages because of flooding. The flooding is caused by winds pushing ocean water toward sand. It is estimated that ten-thousand people die each year because of hurricanes. Many of human’s deaths are caused mainly by the flooding that occurs during a hurricane. For example, during hurricane Katrina in two-thousand and five it was devastating because much of the city of New Orleans flooded. Some eighteen-hundred people lost their lives because of hurricane Katrina and more than twenty-five hundred injuries occurred as well. No one wants to be caught in a hurricane because nowhere in a hurricane are you safe. This is why it is important to look for hurricane warnings and to evacuate if it…

It was a serene Sunday in Banda Aceh, Indonesia when a substantial earthquake measuring around 8-9 on the Richter scale devastated the Indian Ocean region. The quake started at approximately 8:25 a.m. and lasted a prolonged seven minutes. The sea level drastically subsided and residents of the Banda Aceh began collecting fish that were exposed on the beach due to the change in sea level. At this time, in Banda Aceh, it was now 9 a.m., and Banda Aceh was not as peaceful. Overwhelming waves began to demolish homes and businesses on the shore as well as violently carry away pedestrians. Dead bodies, collapsed buildings, and a layer of mud nearly a foot thick accumulated on the shoreline after the tsunami struck. (After the Tsunamis). After twenty minutes of chaos, the lives of the residents as well as the tourists encompassing the Indian Ocean Region including Banda Aceh would be changed forever. The Boxing Day tsunami had numerous detrimental effects such on people, property, and the environment which ultimately raised tsunami awareness around the Indian Ocean region.…
