Hurricanes are one of the most dangerous natural disasters because of their strong winds, massive rains (causing floods) and storm surges. Hurricane Katrina was one of the most deadly hurricanes in history and is still dreadful to even think about.
Hurricanes form near the equator over ocean waters. When they are near the United states they are called hurricanes. However when these storms are near places like Africa they are called cyclones. But it doesn’t matter what they are called, they all form and act the same way in different places. These storms require warm, moist air for fuel to start the storm. People were already trying to leave town and go to relatives and friends houses but the highways had tons of traffic. On about the third day there was already a lot of flooding. When hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Poet Shelton Alexander told us his story. He said, “The flooding was like a giant swimming pool.”
The First day Alexander tried to leave but he says there was so much traffic so he just headed to the superdome where tons of people were staying. He said that it was very “humid”, and “dirty”. He spent the night there twice and on the third day there were holes in the arena and tons of water was coming into the superdome.
When this storm made landfall it had a category three rating. This means that hurricane Katrina was life threatening. The hurricane storm did a great deal of damage, but when it was over, it was catastrophic.
