Whitcomb L. Judson Research Paper
Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1836, Whitcomb L. Judson invented the zipper because he was tired of fastening his high –buttoned boots by hand. He was a heavy man who did not like bending over to button his shoes, so he decided that he needed to find a replacement to the buttons, known today as the zipper. Patented in 1893, the Clasp Locker was a moveable guide that meshed two sets of hooks and eyes together. Excited about this new idea, Judson also invented a machine to manufacture the Clasp Locker. Because Judson was so excited, he mass-produced the Clasp Locker without knowing whether anyone would purchase it right away. This invention also helped people with disabilities by not having to struggle with buttons. The zipper used today takes less time to be put on clothing and is a better style that is not a bulky as the earliest ones were. Surprisingly, the zipper first showed up on children’s clothing so that they did not need their parents help dressing in the morning. The discovery of the zipper has influenced American culture by fashion. American fashion is nothing like many other countries because we are free to wear whatever we desire. Today’s fashion is what defines us as individuals and helps us express ourselves to the people we will one day become. If one were to go to a clothing store to pick out a piece of clothing, the odds of it having a zipper on it is very high. The zipper on jackets is useful to assist us shielding from weather such as wind and all forms of precipitation. In addition to many uses on articles of clothing, the zipper is apparent on camping equipment, to help us protect from the bugs. Thousands of zipper miles are produced every day, which meet the needs of many customers.
Although the zipper has had a huge positive impact on modern society, there is one instance where the results are not to exhilarating to discuss. During the Vietnam War, sadly, there were many dead bodies that needed to be transported out of the country. To do this, the army men would need to place the dead bodies into bags which, of course, contained a zipper.
