White Man's Dog, early in the story, is depicted to be feeble and ineffective. Aspiring to become stronger, he visits Mik-Api, the healer, to learn healing practices and strengthen his knowledge of his own tribe. After studying under Mik-Api, White Man Dog's attains greater knowledge, courage, and ability, allowing him to lead a
band of younger warriors on a mission to poach a herd of horses under the trust of Yellow Kidney, a leader of a horse poaching band. Welch had always enjoyed movies about the underdogs capturing the upper hand and believed showing White Man's journey to manhood would be a great coming of age story.
