White Nose Syndrome
White Nose Syndrome (WNS) affects bats causing them to wake up more often during hibernation and use up their stored fat reserves that were supposed to last throughout the winter. The lack of fat reserves forces bats to fly around for the search of food, but unfortunately most of the bats tend to starve, freeze and die.

Data has been collected to provide information about the areas associated with White Nose Syndrome in bats. Results shown White Nose Syndrome in bats does not impact all of North America, only in the southeast and east regions. Population decline indicated that the disease would threaten 32% of the bat species (Fred, 2013).

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis is an invasive species of beetle that has invaded parts of southern Ontario as well as some of the Northern United States. The beetle was first discovered in Detroit and Windsor in 2002 (Haack, et al., 2002) and later in Ohio, and Maryland in 2003, Indiana in 2004, and Illinois in 2006 (Lelito, et al., 2007). The species is native to South-East Asia, including parts of China, Korea, Japan, Russia, Mongolia and Taiwan (Liu, Bauer, Gao, & Zhao, 2003). “When the 1828 election rolled around, a lot of people were terrified when they heard Andrew "Old Hickory" Jackson was running. If you're wondering how a guy we're calling a bad ass got such a lame nickname, it's because he used to carry a hickory cane around and beat people senseless with it, and if you're wondering why he did that, it's because he was a f#$%*in g lunatic.” (Daniel O’Brien February 15, 2008) This quote from cracked.com illustrates the depth of the ruthlessness within Andrew Jackson, and it is this callousness that made him a tyrant of a President. His decisions were calculated.…

Many people are wondering if they should use cosmetic surgery to improve their looks, and whether it’s really painful when taking a cosmetic surgery. Those questions are answered somewhat honestly through “My New Nose” which appeared in GQ magazine in May 2002. In this essay, Dan Barden described and disclosed exactly what he felt, what he looked like, how he did to live with a thuggish nose after the first operation was botched, and how happy he was and also how he was fascinated when the second surgery went smoothly.…

Affecting about one in every forty-thousand people, Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is fairly rare. It is an umbrella which includes four genetic conditions, all caused by a mutated or altered gene. Each type affects the individual from birth. All types tend to cause some degree of abnormal pigmentation, hearing loss, and facial abnormalities (see figure 1), and a few types create more serious concerns involving anomalies in the hands and arms, and life-threatening issues of the bowel. We are still learning about the condition, but Petrus Johannes Waardenburg, a Dutch scientist, first described it in 1951, with contributions also made by David Klein.…

Some patients have what they call the white coat syndrome; fear of doctors. It is up to the medical professional to explain things as clearly as possible and ask the patient questions if the medical professional does not feel that the patient is understanding. If we as medical professionals do not actively listen and communicate with patients it could lead to him or her leaving and going to another facility that shows empathy. When it comes to communication with patients; the outcome should be good communication and the best outcome for the patient(s). Patients have a high expectation of medical professionals, so it is up to us to learn how to communicate effectively with patients. If a physician, nurse, or other medical professional cannot…
