To protect their political party they abused and threatened Republican office holders and supporters both white and black. They even went as far as participating in threatening and killing six Republican office holders and five to twenty African-American republicans. In the August of 1874 on the 25, white democratic citizens of Louisiana and members of the White League executed an African-American man named Thomas Floyd. This lead to widespread violence against republicans ending with about ten dead. The White League arrested 20 African-Americans are accusing them of planning a “Negro rebellion.”( From citation two. ). The rumor of an uprising spread, bringing many armed angry whites to Coushatta, Louisiana within days of the arrests. They also imprisoned six White republican officers and held all of their prisoners hostage for several days. After days of imprisonment the republican officers agreed to resign from office and leave the state. While being evacuated by armed members of the White League all six members of the state were beaten and killed by a furious white mob. And at least four African-Americans were killed as well. This event was the Coushatta Massacre. The barbarity surprised the nation. No one was put in jail for the six murders of the office holders or the brutal abuse towards the blacks captured and killed.
