White Teeth Summary
The book White teeth touched on a lot of issues that are somewhat common nowadays but are approached in a very universal way so that anyone from any background could understand it like myself. The book talks about what it’s like for families of different cultures to come together and live somewhere completely different from where they are from and try to teach their children to keep up with their family traditions. This can be very hard for immigrant families of every culture. Being from Cape Verdean decent, my grandparents as well as my parents still try to instill our Cape Verdean traditions. One being “Bandera” which is “The flag Feast, that’s when Cape Verdeans have a festival to worship the saints, it ranges from April to July. There is also another tradition we carry, it’s “Independencia de Cabo Verde" which is the Independence of Cape Verde. I think everyone has their own set of stories and events that have impacted them in some way and that have help shaped them. But I think that everyone has one of those stories. Everyone has something that’s happened to them that’s changed them in one way or another and only them and it’s something unique that can’t really be replicated. But now with everyone moving to places like America, France, England etc. in search of better lives the younger generations are getting exposed to much more information and diversity in their lives that it becomes hard to stick to set of rules and traditions because there is so much around you that you soak up and

In the articles “The Totally Gruesome, Totally Fascinating History of teeth” and “Where are all the Dentists?” both by Kristin lewis, it talks about how there are lots of challenges that people faced with dentistry over time. There are lots of small problems, but there are also lots of big problems, one that it talks about in the article is that back in the day, before we had good dental work, people would get there teeth pulled without anesthetics. In the article it says ”Tough cowboys of the American West would weep openly as their diseased teeth were yanked out with pliers--often with little more than a few gulps of whiskey to dull the searing pain,” (Lewis 14). This shows that people back in the day were willing to get there teeth pulled and go through the pain so they don't get an infection.…

I have selected the treatment of women in the Bible and the Qur’an. Both the Bible and the Quran seem to indicate men and women were created as equals. Men and women were created together, separate form one another but for each other and to live in a mutual relationship for protection and to care for one another. In the book of Genesis 2 (page 159 in text book) it is written “And God created the human in his image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them.” This, as it is written, states that God created both men and women in His image therefore they should be equal in His eyes. The Qur’an says that it is equitable that the rights of women are similar to those of men. Both of these would indicate women and men are equal, however there is much evidence to the contrary.…

Cinco de Mayo today is a much bigger holiday in North America than in Mexico. It has been celebrated in California since 1863. There are festivals and events all over the country to highlight Mexican culture. These include concerts, folk ballet and Mexican dancing. Mexican food and drink are also eaten and drunk in huge quantities. Many schools, especially those with large Mexican communities, take part in awareness activities to educate students about the importance of the day. One tradition does take place in Mexico every year. Mexican soldiers, sailors and air force pledge allegiance to the Mexican flag. This takes place in the capital Mexico City and in all other regional capitals.…

The theme “One should not blindly follow tradition for tradition’s sake”, can be proven true in the poem “Mending Wall” by Robert Frost, and the short story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. In both works, you can see how people follow traditions because their previous generations did. In the poem, literary devices help show how the neighbors meet to fix fence because their previous generations did. In the short story, the whole town gathers in the town center to have a lottery because it has gone on longer than the oldest person in their town.…

Cinco de Mayo or otherwise none as the fifth of May, “commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over France during 1862 at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco- Mexican War (1861-1867)”. This holiday is relatively minor within Mexico; in the United States Cinco de Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, which could partake in eating Mexican food, dancing to Mexican music, or participating in any other types of Mexican culture during the holiday. Cinco de Mayo is normally only celebrated within heavy Latino culture areas rather than other cultured areas.…

The movement to change from tradition comes in many forms, but includes complex and often hostile results. The change may be subtle and seem to lack a negative results; however, breaking away from the deep roots of tradition will cause an effect overflowing with strong emotions. This overflowing of emotions will carry over into unseen areas of peoples life’s and culture. This idea remains true when the broader society experiences tension from an individual changing from the society’s traditional values to the individuals values. Authors Barbara Mellix, Nancy Scheper-Hughes, and Robert Scholes wrote essays attempting to explain the struggle individuals and society face when trying to follow the traditional path instead of their own path to achieve success. As a result, too much tradition limits and controls people’s gifts and talents. Therefore, an individual and the broader society needs to learn from the tradition taught to them and strive to travel their own path to display the power within an individual.…

Mexico’s Independence Day is celebrated on September 16 and is the celebration of the country’s separation from Spain in 1810. This holiday is a lot like America’s Fourth of July. They celebrate with fireworks, parades, dances, and some cities even hold bullfights. The Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe is a religious Catholic holiday and it is celebrated on December 12. It is the celebration of the believed appearance of the Virgin Mary in Mexico City on that day in the 1531. On this holiday, thousands of people travel to Mexico City to see the spot where the Virgin Mary was spotted and to honor and celebrate her. Revolution Day is always celebrated on the third Monday of November. This holiday is to remember the ten year revolution against Dictator Diaz. It is a public holiday so most businesses and all schools are canceled for the whole day. It is celebrated with festivals and parades. Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for the fifth of May, which is when the holiday is celebrated. This holiday is to celebrate the Mexican army’s victory over the French, which happened on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo is actually not celebrated as much in Mexico as it is in America. Although, in American we are not celebrating the victory of the Mexican Army, we are “just using it as a day to party and eat fake Mexican food,” says…
