College is about getting a degree, but staying in a library or a dorm all day is going to make a miserable four years. College is about allowing students to feel independent and to get involved, which results in living in a stable environment, as well as community engagement. Of course getting an education is prominent, but there are other essential components to a college lifestyle. In Graeme Wood’s essay, “Is College Doomed?”, he explains the diverse dynamics of the online school, Minerva. The founder of Minerva, Ben Nelson, explained to Wood that, students yearly, “attend university in a different place, so that after four years they’ll have the kind of international experience that other universities advertise but can rarely deliver” (Wood…
Her essay originally was published in the Academe, the journal of the American Association of University Professors. It has 5 sections and each section is about one full page in length. The first section of her essay discusses the changes in universities’ images and ethics. Students are developing their identities and lifestyles which is why college is important. Several university…
In Colleges Prepare People for Life by Charles Murray, it is argued that college prepares people for a job after graduation, but above a career, it prepares people to achieve a successful life. An excellent, satisfying job is only the beginning of the benefits that college may offer. Individuals because of college are faced with countless possibilities compared to those who never attend.…
for starts I'm gonna talk about what Vivek Wadhwa said in his debate and collaborate that with and article from the textbook but anyways, Wadbwa talks about how college gives you more then just an education it teachers you crucial communication and social skills that you cant find anywhere else. Higher level education teaches you how to adapt and overcome failure, how to learn to strive to be a person and not give up when things get rough. All those things i just listed off is what life is life is about adapt and over and expecting failure and college teachers you how to responsibly handle stressful situations and not lose your mind in the process. And of page (329) the passage “Universty undergraduates learning outcomes” goes hand in hand with what Wadhwa was arguing. What this article is talking about is what you can get out of college and I will list these things: Intellectual breadth and lifelong learning, Inquiry and criticl thinking, communication and global/multicultral knowledge and awareness.…
Whether college matters to people or not, the purpose of college is to prepare students of their career and in all areas of life. Liz Addison is known for her essay published on “New York Times” in two thousand and seven called, “Two Years Are Better Than Four”, which it became a runner up for an essay contest. “Two Years Are Better Than Four” is a response to Rick Perlstein’s essay “What’s the Matter with College?”. Perlstein’s argument in “What’s the Matter with College?” is that college don’t matter and that it ends in America, but Addison opposed the statements elaborating on how college isn’t going anywhere and that it matters for the future. Addison is a writer who graduated in community college of Southern Maine and Piedmont Virginia…
Wendy Brown in the sixth chapter of Undoing the Demos talks about the misuse of higher education in todays society. She makes the point that we humans no longer seek higher learning for its traditional values. Instead we obsess over what the knowledge we obtain can do to further increase our "value". Brown states that, "It is not sought for developing the capacities of citizens, sustaining culture, knowing the world, or envisioning and crafting different ways of life in common. Rather, it is sought for positive return on investment." (Brown 177) This underlying truth has become an epidemic in todays education system.…
Throughout the essay Young compares universities in the past to universities present. He notes similarities and differences that he has noticed and uses this to inform his readers about significant change. Comparisons made from past and present univeristies allow Young to justify his belief that universities are in fact changing. “However, in spite of marked differences, there are similarities between what happened then and what is happening today,...then the dogma of religion, now the dogma of business-threatening to change the activities of the community of teachers and scholars” (217). He believes that universities in the past were focused on student interests and suggests that present universities are interested with profit that can be made through commercialization.…
Right now in our society a college education is no longer an option or privilege, but rather a necessity. We are practically raised and conditioned to believe that one needs higher education in order to succeed in life. There is a saying that says "if you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Nowadays, going to college is common in United States. According to the statistic, there are more than 70 percents of the student are going to college after high school graduation. After high school millions of kids get a start in life without any higher education. Going to a college or a university of some sort is one of the wisest choices a person can make. Does the time and effort that individuals put into education pay off? Economists have been investigating these questions since the late 1950s. The answer to that question is Yes! There are many reasons why you should continue your education after high school. A college education gives you choices. Whether you plan to attend a four-year college or university, community college, or technical school, you will gain knowledge and skills that will help you succeed for the rest of your life. Education beyond high school will put you in a better position to help your family, your community and give you the kind of life you dream of having. The more education you pursue, the better career options you will have. Receiving a college education can bring you knowledge, certain work conditions, and money. With a college degree you are able to go into life knowing so much more than you already know…
When an average high schooler walks into senior year, the students are quickly bombarded by school counselors discussing which four year college they should apply too. At my high school, it was never second guessed whether the student would be attending college but was assumed. Most people have misconceptions that if they do not get a degree, they will unable to obtain a job and have an overall unsuccessful life. In Charles Murray’s, “Are Too Many People Going to College” and Freeman Hrabowski’s “College Prepares People for Life”, the two author both discuss the education system we have in place, however, Charles Murray provides a more convincing argument that college, contrary to popular belief, is just not for everyone.…
For most, higher education is the key to social mobility, financial stability, and self-actualization. Living-wage jobs are difficult to find, especially without an education past high school. Workers are competing in a market that demands knowledge, high-skills, and leadership. College is where young adults can learn to be successful.…
Since the beginning of our education we are taught that we have to go to college to be successful. However it now has become a debate whether it is actually beneficial or non beneficial on applying to college. Such as a big percentage of students don't become successful after college and just end up in debt. Such as a majority of students think that a high school education is just enough for them to get by. This puts a lot of pressure on students to be competitive and continually having to be doing their best trying to be the ideal student. This gives another reason for students not going to college, as they feel they do not portray the idealistic student who meets the rigorous needs.…
In America, college is perceived as one of the most important decisions you will make in your lifetime. Since elementary school, students are taught so that they can one day attend to a good college. However, the question is: is college the best option? Many would say that it is, including authors David Leonhardt of The New York Times and Freeman Hrabowski, author of "Colleges Prepare People for Life". Even though David Leonhardt and Freeman Hrabowski both address the idea that college is worth it in the long run, Leonhardt provides a further convincing argument by revealing where exactly college fits into our constantly growing society, using persuasive word choice, and constantly incorporating facts and statistics.…
It is very important to attend college as it provides many advantages and opportunities. For some, continuing education past high school is a scary thought. More course work, adjusting and fitting into a new environment and finding out how to take care of the forever rising cost of tuition expenses can be very intimidating and stressful for young adolescents. Students may begin to ask themselves what’s the importance of a college education. However, in todays economy the importance of a college education cannot be measured. The benefits of college far outweigh the stress. By going to college one could achieve a higher education, better employment opportunities, increased wages, better health, personal growth and help diversify one’s way of…
In discussion of colleges importance, one controversial issue has been on how much it really matters. On the one hand, college supporters argue that college is very important and can help one achieve a prosperous future. On the other hand, college detractors contend that college is a waste of time and not useful in the long run. My own view is that college can be useful when people use it in the right way; to gain a degree, and not just to party.…
Everyone in America knows that college is where you want to be. At a very young and impressionable age, the children in our schools are asked what college they want to go to. As this idea that a higher education is something they’ll inevitably have, the children go on to believe they need it to have a better life. However, is that really true? College, in particular, is a very strange and corrupt system. Many problems reside on the modern college campus, so many that we wonder if going to college was ever the better option. The truth is, it’s not. Going to college is not worth all its burdening, and often crippling, costs.…
