Please type a brief personal history leading to your decision to become a teacher, as well as your thoughts on how students learn best and how you would address the needs of diverse learners (e.g., English language learners, students with disabilities) in urban settings. Also, discuss why you chose CSULA to pursue your teaching credential (refer to the CCOE conceptual framework and mission statement).

As a high school student I decided to take a ROP (Regional Occupational Program) class in child development. The class required us to attend class every class meeting and when done with the course to complete hours to receive a certificate of completion. I did my hours at A Higher Learning Child Development in the city of Lynwood, CA. I was asked to watch over a child who had Down syndrome, I was scared at the beginning because I have never worked or been around anyone with a disability but I was up for the challenge. As I got to know the child I noticed he loved to be read to the smile he gave was priceless. I really enjoyed spending time with him and teaching him as well as learning from him. I then realized that I was made to work with children with disabilities I felt as if I was born to help them.
I strongly believe that the younger the child is exposed to an education the more advantages in life they’ll have. The first five years of a child’s life is the most critical time for them to grow and learn. Each child learns at their own pace and should be challenged to think and do what they believe is right for them without a reminder of an adult. The condition of a child's environment (home & classroom) is an important aspect of how they grow. Understanding the different parts of the child’s home or classroom helps ensure that our children are getting what they needs to grow and develop ideally. Understanding where the child is coming from will help us comprehend the situation they’re in and will help us better assist them. When parents are involved in their children’s education at home, the children do better in school. The earlier that parent involvement begins in a child’s educational process, the more powerful the effect is. A parent’s interest in their child’s education will eventually lead to a very successful child. I strongly believe that a child’s parents are the child’s first educators. Parents teach children values, morals, and encourage them. The home is a powerful center of learning for children.
As an educator in the field we have to provide a better quality atmosphere for early age children, which benefits their academic, physical, emotional, and social development. During their preschool years, children grow characteristics which will affect their lifelong love of learning.
I chose Cal State University Los Angeles to pursue my teaching credential because their emphasis on teaching educational equity, professionalism, reflective practice and collaboration. The university offers educational equity which is very important for the child; their environment should be equipped for their individual needs. They also focus on professionalism which will prepare me with particular knowledge and the skills necessary to perform the role as a professional educator. They also assist with reflective practice which I will benefit from because it will help me pay critical attention to the practical values and theories for my professional growth. Lastly, they offer collaboration skills; which will help me learn how to work with people to achieve shared goals.
