It came to Europe by sea in October 1347, many years before Joan of Arc's time. It happened when twelve Genoese trading ships docked at the port of Messina after a trip through the Black Sea.The people who were on the docks to greet the ships were met with a scary surprise: most of the sailors aboard the ships were dead, and those who were still alive were sick. They were covered in mysterious black spots that oozed blood. Over the next five years, the mysterious Black Death would kill more than 20 million people in Europe–almost one-third of the continent’s population. As said by historian Charles Creighton in the book The History of Epidemics in Britain, “Immediate effect of the depopulation had been to mobilise, as it were, the labouring class.” (Creighton 183). She was initially afraid to speak to other people about them. In the book Dove of War by Bill Cain, it says, “I was in my thirteenth year when I heard a voice from God to help me govern my conduct. And the first time I was very much afraid.” (Cain 181). She said the voices always spoke in French. Scared of them at first, eventually she came to like the voices. Joan of Arc complained that lots of noise or company around stopped the voices and visions from coming to her. Also, she often heard the voices after the ringing of the Catholic Church bell. Saint Michael appeared to Joan as a handsome gentleman. Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret appeared as nothing except faces. Most importantly for Joan of Arc, the voices commanded her to do things. She claimed that they told her to help the Dauphin by going to Orleans and breaking England's siege of the city.
