Kanter was kept at an airport in Romania during the weekend; however, border police justified the practice as Turkish authorities rendered his passport invalid. Finally, Kanter was permitted to head to London and then New York to leave; officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and others stepped in the process to help him.
A spokesman for Romanian Border Police Fabian Badila told The Associated Press that Kanter came Saturday at about 1 p.m. from Frankfurt at Bucharest’s Henri Coanda Airport, using his Turkish passport.

Kanter also believes that last year's coup was orchestrated by Erdogan himself.
“I call it the fake coup attempt,” Kanter said. “Last year, they did a fake coup attempt themselves, so they can control everything. So right now, the Erdogan government is controlling the army, controlling the police, controlling judges, controlling journalists, everything.”
Kanter was open about supporting Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen, who runs counter to Erdogan. Kanter stated that he feared being sent back to Turkey when he was kept in Romania.
He even could not contact any of his family member or relatives. “There’s no democracy. There’s no freedom of speech, freedom of religion. It’s definitely been crazy,” Kanter said. “Right now, even if I tried to communicate with my parents, my mum, my dad, my brother or sister, they would probably right now listen on their phones and as soon as they are in contact with me they’ll put them in a jail. And the jails are not fun, of course.”
Kanter holds a green card for entry to the U.S.; however, he does not hold a passport. The issue is controversial as Kanter has several international trips scheduled this summer. Moreover, he would like to enter Canada without a passport which is difficult as Oklahoma City plays always participates in
