Phyllis Schlafly was America’s leading anti-feminist. Don’t get me wrong, she was a strong, smart and educated women. She was a Constitutional Lawyer (graduated from University of Washington) with a previous focus on anti-communism and then later focused on opposing the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and opposing the left wing, liberal agenda. The ERA caught her attention during 1972 when it was passed in Congress and in both houses. To pass the ERA fully they needed three fourths states to ratify it. So, to make sure that did not happen she organized lobbyist groups who were against the ratification of the ERA. The groups started lobbying and protesting in 1982. These groups included Protestants, Catholics, Orthodox Jews, and Mormons. Though their religions differed they all had a common goal in mind. These mothers and wives would not stand by and let their daughters be drafted into the military or just let the tendency for women to win custody hearing come to pass. In the Bible it says that men should provide for the women and the family. Schlafly believed in traditional household duties. Women cooked, cleaned, and took care of the kids. Men would go out and work to earn a living for him and his family. Though today men and women both work, putting children in daycare was not something to be considered traditional. She also believed that men and women were different, that in fact they should not be treated the same. She feared a decline in chivalry, and that women in Western Society were privileged to be treated differently. Schlafly stated that ‘gender equality’ would be a step backward for women in Western Society. Women are treated extremely well in past and present society. If men and women were treated the same women would be sorely disappointed. For example, if men and women were created the same, women should be able to do just as many pull ups as men. Men on average for the USMC fitness requirements should be able to do at minimum four pull ups. Women only have to do 15 seconds of flex arm hang. You may ask why is it so different for women and men? Well, it's because men are designed with a different shoulder and back structure to support heavy lifting, etc. Women are made to carry and deliver babies among other things. If women want to be treated equal in all aspects of life than good luck, because God designed women and men completely
