Who Is Piero Della Francesca's Annunciation?
Piero della Francesca’s Annunciation embodies both the notion of the period eye and the analytic impulse. The piece is an example of the period eye in that it is representative of what 15th century Italians would have wished to see in the piece. The Christian annunciation was a well-trod theme in western art history, particularly during the renaissance. Like many similar pieces, Mary appears as, obviously, one of the central figures. She is draped in a period style with dress of red with a blue cloak, colors then symbolic of her purity and divine royalty. God appears above in the same colors, yet reversed on his person.     This paper will explore very important differences and similarities of two master pieces of art work, both named "Madonna and Child", available at Metropolitan Museum of Art. First piece, "Madonna and Child" C.1230, was made by Berlinghiero, an Italian artist who lived in early thirteenth century. The other version of "Madonna and Child" was made in 1480's, by a famous Venetian artist Giovanni Bellini, who lived between 1430-1516. Therefore, this short paper will be an attempt to show the change in art occurred in the same area but in different times.Starting with the "Madonna and Child" of Berlinghiero, which is a very unnatural image, Mary and Christ look flat because there is lack of showing depth. Mary is holding Jesus in her arm in front of a golden background. While Jesus looks towards his right, Mary is looking at the viewer. She has suffering expression in her face. The lines around her eyes and forehead, and her lips shows that she is upset. Mary appears like she knows the future crucifixion of her son. Also another reason why she is upset, would be the isolation and anger towards her because of having a baby in an illegitimate way, which is not true but most of the people didn't understand when she gave a birth to Christ . Mary's hands, one holding Jesus, one pointing him, are very thin and long. Jesus, unlike Mary, has a calm expression and his face looks very old and mature for his body's size. He is holding a scroll, probably it's a religious text from the Bible, which may refer to bringing the direct afflatus of the Holy Spirit.Performing "Madonna and Child", Berlinghiero was influenced by Byzantine icons, small portable paintings depicting holy figures usually Christ and the Virgin. This icon-like image exhibits many of the characteristics of Byzantine traits, for instance, the Virgin's long straight nose and small mouth, schematic linear folds of Christ's robe.When examining…

    The Annunciation with Saints Ansanus and Margherita is proclaimed to be one of the greatest if not the most magnificent art piece of the Gothic time period. This piece was originally created for the side alter in the Sienna Cathedral but after being passed on to many different Churches it is now located in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. In this piece the artist has placed a large amount of iconography into it. The Easiest hidden icon to distinguish is the lilies in the vase in the middle of the picture showing the purity of Mary. Along with the Lilies the artist also has the Archangel Rafael holding an olive branch which is the symbol of peace showing he means no harm to Mary. Lastly, the author also has the Holy Ghost coming down from Heaven surrounded by eight angels representing the Holy Spirit or God is coming into her.     The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston contains some of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, and not least among these is Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, painted in 1467 by Bartolomeo d. Giovanni Corradini, better known as Fra Carnevale. This Urbinian painter and architect produced some of the greatest architectural paintings of the early Renaissance, and his techniques expressed an interest in the progression of the Italian Renaissance style of classical idealism. The Presentation, measuring 57 5/8 x 38 in., depicts the apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary’s Presentation in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents at the age of three. Executed in oil and tempera on panel, the work frames a young Virgin in purple by the grand, classical architecture of the Temple. The entire work confers an atmosphere of contrast: the softness of Mary’s companions with the sharply defined, half-nude beggars, the religious with the classical reliefs, the tiny Virgin with the enormous architecture, and the brightly lit interior with the cloudy sky.     Many of the objects depicted in High Renaissance paintings were there for a reason. In “The Annunciation,” Mary is the largest figure and the main focus. She is shown facing front, with her head tilted toward the floor and her eyes almost closed. In her left hand she is holding the Bible, representing her devoutness to God, her right hand is raised, all fingers pointing up. Archangel Gabriel is on the left side of the panel, shown smaller and wearing the ornate vestments of a priest. His clothes symbolize the similarity between him and the clergy of the Church: they both share the word of God. They are both wearing very loose fitting clothing that have many folds. The Holy Trinity is represented here by God, baby Jesus carrying his cross, and a dove, often a symbol of the Holy Spirit. They are all connected by seven rays of light, flowing directly from God’s mouth onto Mary. The seven rays represent the seven days it took God to create the universe. Gold is used as a symbol to represent divinity (Smith). White lilies in a vase between angel Gabriel and Mary often symbolized Mary’s purity. Written on the vase is “Ave Regina,” representing the Hail Mary prayer. The Latin words written in gold are archangel Gabriel telling Mary, “‘Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus’” (Luke 1:31).
