in the 70s, times were in great need of change. However, due to the fact that we are all human and things do happen, many errors did take place during the presidency. Changes did take place and mistakes were made, even if that meant hurting the American people in the long run. It is clear to see, President Nixon was not a perfect man, free from association with money fraud and scandals in the White House. This paper will discuss the warrants, ethics, and cognitive dissonance that took place in the Watergate scandal where it played a major factor in his resignation and what possibly led to the change for the American people.
President Nixon, was elected the 37th President of the United States in 1969. He was also serving as a U.S. Representative from California (Friedel & Sidey, 2006, p.1). He was a man who understood the purpose of bringing people together. President Nixon ended the American fight in Vietnam. He was focused merely on improving the relations with the U.S.S.R and China.
President Nixon was born in 1913, who went to Duke University studying. He married Patricia Ryan in the 1940s; and they had two beautiful daughters. He was also a Navy lieutenant back during the times of World War 11. In 1950 he won a Senate seat and then two years later, he was appointed General Eisenhower at the age of 39. That is when he became Vice President .He was nominated President by acclamation in 1960(Friedel & Sidey, 2006, p2).
However, he lost to President John F Kennedy. Although he lost he won his party’s nomination and won the seat of Vice President against Hubert H. Humphrey and also third-party candidate George C. Wallace. President Nixon accomplished during the time his time in office. From the new anticrime laws and environmental programs. He served his first term as president during the time where American astronauts made the first moon (Friedel & Sidey, 2006, p2).
But even though he has accomplished things during his time as President. Early resignation behind the Watergate scandal made an impact on the American people. The Watergate scandal introduced much issues in the White House. From burglary and lies, where President Nixon found himself in the middle of the catastrophe. During his time investigating and being investigated he continuously assured the American people that he will get to the bottom of everything. Asking his fellow Republican Party as well as friends. If they had any involvement in the scandal, the party denied any accusation. As time continued he began to lose his majority political party. Where the support that he once had, he did not have any longer. Through adversity and claiming his innocence. It was hard later in the investigation to prove that. This is where the speech came into play and he decided to go ahead and resign. Moving forward for the American people so they can heal.
Warrants
Warrants is parallel of three types of thinking upon which an arguer might base his or her arguments.
With these three types of warrants they can be substantive, motivational, and authoritative. With Examples that the argument could be that, risky investments are bad business (Wahl, 2013, p. 85).During the scandal of President Nixon, people were confused as to why he resigned. There was argument that he left because he was a part of the scandal, and that he should resign. With resigning that would cause some risky situation. However, President Nixon continued to fight for his involvement in the “Watergate Scandal” a scandal that exposed greed. Documents that began to go missing that was important to the political office. Gasoline rationing and Arab oil embargo. With having a scandal such as this would cause a major problem with other countries that President Nixon has worked hard to come to an agreement with and allow peace. He was not aware of the burglary and the fact that his political party had some kind of involvement in the scandal. Because of the fact that he was going to be impeached and not having enough leverage to support his Presidency, it was in his best interest to move on. This was something that he did not want to do, because of the condition the American people was heading towards. From being divided during World War11 and now beginning to bring order and help to the United States. This scandal came at a time where things was getting better for the
Nation.
Cognitive Dissonance Theory
Based on knowledge that an individual has. Creates cognition and the receiver evaluates their relationships to other cognition. It is a belief, thought, idea, or piece of knowledge. It is created when an individual possess two cognitions that don’t fit together and make the individual feel psychologically uncomfortable (Wahl, 2013, p 57). The Nixon scandal brought just that for the people. How would they be able to trust any candidacy in the future?
With the promises that President Nixon made to the Vietnamese that he would come to their aid, that promise was not fulfilled. He was not able to follow through with his promise due to the impeachment request and resignation. Because of that, Korea began their final offensive in 1975, and U.S. support was not provided .Vietnamese were defeated in less than 55 days (Friedel, Sidey, 2006).This is where it caused such hurt and pain to the people of this country. Realizing that we are all human with many flaws and errors.
Ethics
Discussion, determination, and deliberation processes that attempt to decide what is right or wrong. What others should or should not do, and what is considered appropriate in our individual, communal, and professional lives. President Richard Nixon was a man who made a huge mistake that would cost this country some great deal of pain. With the scandal and the lack of help from the U.S. Government for Vietnam War. How could anyone look at him in a greater way? He let the people down. Due to misused power, cover up and illegal activities (Friedel& Sidey, 2006). In the most important and critical time that the country needed him, he decided to engage in his own power and allow what he felt and believed at the time was right to override who he was as a president . That would make anyone become skeptical of new president candidacy in the near future. However, he decided, instead of getting an impeachment that he was stepping down and resigning. That was in the best interest for himself and the American people.
Conclusion
With the history of President Richard Nixon, it was full of richness and controversy. With the arguments of why he resigned? Was that the ethical way of handling the scandal and where do America go from there. Those are questions that anyone one would ask. He was a man that brought some great qualities to the white house. He saw a need and he went after the needs of the people. Although, his intentions was well in the beginning sometimes there are things that can get the best of us. It was a very noble thing for him to writing a speech to the people to answer some questions that would lay in the heart of many. Also to step down instead of dealing with an impeachment. There was a statement he made that pretty much gave a little description of the type of man he truly was he states from August 8, 1974 that he would resign the next day to begin “That process of healing which is so desperately needed in America (Friedel & Sidey, 2006). With the statement that he left allowed the people that, yes he made a mistake. However, things will get better and all that he showed the people is we are all human with many errors.
