Jive, releasing a pair of singles, “Self-Made” and Fakin’ It.” During 2010, two more of her singles hit the music charts. Mentoring her in these early years of her career was the King of R&B, R. Kelly. K. Michelle looks up to Kelly as a father, and follows his footsteps. During her late teen years, K. Michelle met Kelly at his concert back stage, and wanted to show off her talent to him. Immediately, Kelly wanted to hear more of her music. When she got the call to come to Atlanta to start recording, her boyfriend became abusive and would not let her leave Tennessee, she became pregnant and her career had to get put on hold. Two years later, K. Michelle escaped from her boyfriend and asked her mother to raise her baby boy until she was able to get her music out and start a career. When Michelle arrived in Atlanta she lived in a motel room for three weeks until finally getting a job as an overnight waitress at IHOP. With doubts and the feeling of failure, six months passed and she still had no luck with her music. K. Michelle tells the story of how she had to get a second job at a hotel in Atlanta as a housekeeper. The second night she worked, she ran into R. Kelly, literally! Robert Kelley, remembered her, and the next morning they went to his studio to start mentoring. Working on mixtapes and singles for years, K. Michelle finally started to get recognized. In 2013 K.
Michelle’s first full length album, Rebellious Soul, reached number one on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop albums. This album shows that Kayla is feisty and doesn’t take any drama from anyone. But also she expresses the heartache she feels after a break up. Her song “VSOP” blasted on every R&B radio station around the country for weeks, “I couldn’t believe it, as an artist I am supposed to be accustomed to hearing my music on the radio, but hearing what people had to say about my music was an amazing feeling, my goal had been completed with this album and it was time to start my next project.” Another song, Can’t Raise a Man, from her first album also did numbers, fans says this song really spoke to them. K. Michelle sings about how a woman can’t raise her man, if he isn’t a gentleman, she can’t be with him. After releasing this album, Michelle took a break from her music talents and wanted to show her fans how she lives her everyday life on the hit reality show Love & Hip HOP: Atlanta. After four seasons of being on the reality show, she started her own show, “K. Michelle My Life.” While preparing for her show, Kayla began to release her second
album. “Anybody Want to Buy a Heart?” K. Michelle’s second album released in 2015, this album shows a different side of the artist no one expected. It’s a mix between R&B and rock, it shows diversity. When she was younger, her first voice teacher got her to sing country and yodeling, this helped her become the artist she is today. The album’s first single “Love Em All” is a mix between R&B and rock, the song is about how a woman should keep dating until she finds the right one. Another song. “Maybe I Should Call” recalls the true story of an old flame. K. Michelle’s contemplates on calling her ex-lover or if she should just let him go for good. Listening to the album “Anybody Want to Buy a Heart,” is the best way to get to know K. Michelle. With this CD, K really wants people to feel great when they hear it, and to know that good music is alive. So many situations can be identified within the album. The album expresses her relationships, her connection with God and also her relationship with her son. K. Michelle is the type of artist who cares about her fans and wants them to feel what she is singing about. Her passion for music, speaks clearly, her life story makes you not want to give up on your dreams. Both of her albums, shows two different sides of her. Personally, many of her songs has helped me through tough situations, when listening to her music, I feel as if she knows exactly how I feel. I feel as if everyone should have that one artist who they can listen to when times are rough. When I first started exploring K. Michelle I thought, her music was very different and it was something I could listen to, and now I’m beginning to think that K. Michelle’s music is very diverse, it shows a different side of her as an artist and many people can relate to her.
