Some people may say that Fuchs should have kept the secrets secret and he should have been a loyal citizen, and that he failed his national responsibility to Britain by sharing their classified secrets with another nation. This is false because Fuchs says he is doing the right thing, and he is. “Fuchs told Gold he was proud to be helping the Soviet Union…” (127) He believes that the Soviet Union needs this information, and though he regrets doing some of the things he did, nevertheless, he did do the right thing in the end. Not only does it matter what the countries think of him, but it is what he believes is correct, and it was a necessary step to take. If Fuchs did not give the Soviets the information, then America would have a monopoly in nuclear technology or nuclear warfare, and there would not be the kind of treaty that there is today, mutual assured destruction. ¨When I learned about the purpose of the work¨ Fuchs later said ¨I decided to inform Russia and I established contact through another member of the communist party.¨ (62) This is the time when he makes the decision to contact the Soviets, and Klaus Fuchs would prove invaluable to the Soviets in the information he steals for them. While he knew what he was doing was illegal, he thought that, as a communist, he needed to give the Soviets the information.
