The U.S. Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787 by delegates who went to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. The convention was supervised by George Washington. It established fundamental laws, America’s national government and the basic rights for American citizens. In America’s first government document which was the Articles of Confederation.
The Articles of Confederation was approved in 1781. At that time was a loose confederation of states. The nation was less together each state was running like independent countries instead of being one whole nation. In that time the national government was small, it was only comprised of one single legislature. In the Congress of Confederation, there was no president, and there was no judicial branch. Shortly after America won its independence from Great Britain, it victory in 1783 in the American Revolutionary War, it became increasingly noticeable that the United States needed a more stable central government in order to remain secure.
In 1786 a lawyer and politician named Alexander Hamilton from New York, announced a constitutional convention to deliberate the matter of improving America’s government to become stronger. In February 1787 the idea was settled. It invited all 13 states to send delegates or commissioners to the meeting in Philadelphia.
On May 25, 1787, the Constitutional Convention opened in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania State House. Which today is known as the Independence hall. 55 delegates attended from all the 13 states, all except Rhode Island. Rhode Island did not send a representatives because the state did not want a forceful central government interfering in its economic business. George Washington who would eventually become a national hero was voted to be the president of the convention by a unanimous
vote.
The delegates that were in the meeting had been given the task by the Congress with amending the Articles of Confederation. Although, the delegates began debating the proposals for an whole different form of government. After the debate, that had continued throughout 1787 and sometimes was endangered of beginning to wreck, they all had developed a method that established three branches of government. They were executive, legislative and judicial. They all also made a system of balances and check so that one branch of the government wouldn’t have to much power or too little power but, just enough to govern with control. The responsibilities of each national government branch was also laid out and spread out to each branch equally.
The delegates, who also became known as the “framers” of the Constitution, were mostly well educated, the mostly were merchants, farmers, bakers and lawyers. Many have served in The Continental Army, Continental Congress, which known as the Congress of the Confederation, or the colonial legislatures. Eight delegates signed the Declaration of Independence, and six others had signed the Articles of Confederation.
In 1789 James Madison a member of the newly established U.S. House of Representatives brought in the 19 amendment to the Constitution. On September 25, 1789 the Congress adopted 12 of the 19 amendments and sent the to the states for approval. Ten of the 12 amendments that were sent out were approved by the states and added to the constitution on December 10, 1789 and are known as the Bill of Rights. The Bill of rights guarantees individual people basic protections as a citizen, the rights include religion, the freedom of speech and the press. For James Madison’s contributions to the drafting of the Constitution he became known as the “Father of Constitution”.
